Tyvon Branch to Chiefs: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsMar 10, 2015

Veteran safety Tyvon Branch is getting a fresh start for the first time in his NFL career. The 28-year-old agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Branch's deal is for one year with a potential maximum value of $4 million.

The Chiefs confirmed the signing, with general manager John Dorsey telling the Chiefs' official website that the team is thrilled with the addition of Branch to the secondary.

"We are excited we were able to reach a deal with Tyvon and bring him to Kansas City," Dorsey said. "He is a physical player who we feel can help our defense. We're looking forward to having him."

Branch's inclusion on the free-agent market came as a late surprise, as he was released by the Oakland Raiders on March 3 after seven years with the team.

Before Branch's release was official, La Canfora noted on Twitter that Branch would be a welcome addition to a safety class that's lacking depth:

La Canfora also tweeted that Branch wouldn't need to wait long for teams to start pursuing him:

Despite La Canfora's note about health, Branch hasn't been able to stay on the field for the last two years. He's appeared in a total of five games since the start of the 2013 season due to ankle and foot problems.

According to Rick Drummond of Pro Football Focus, Branch's best role is playing up in the box: "Best suited for play around the box, he logged over 74 percent of his snaps in 2011 as a strong safety or playing over the slot, but his snaps had actually leaned toward a deeper alignment over his final three seasons (19 games) in Oakland."

Even though injuries have taken away a lot of valuable playing time, Branch is young enough to reach the potential he once displayed that made the Raiders give him a long-term contract extension.

Given the value of having a versatile safety who isn't afraid to make plays in the running game with wrap-up tackling skills, Branch could turn into one of the best values this offseason. He just has to stay healthy long enough to let his talent shine.
