Manchester United Transfer News: Angel Di Maria Urged to Leave, Latest Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenMar 10, 2015

Former Manchester United full-back Paul Parker says star winger Angel Di Maria needs to leave the club if he wishes to return to the player he was before his transfer during the summer of 2014.

Writing for Eurosport.com, Parker stated the Argentina international's dismissal during Monday's FA Cup loss against Arsenal was the absolute low point from his tenure at Old Trafford, and the only answer is to move on:

"

United have been awful. And when you suffer the lows after such big highs, there are only a few people who can deal with it and Di Maria is definitely not one of them at this moment in time. To be honest, I don’t know if anyone can blame him.

The only way it is going to work out for Di Maria, he only way he is going to get back to being the player he was before, is to move on. The way things are going at Manchester United, he is not going to progress as a player because the team are playing horribly and you can’t see how that situation is going to change.

He goes on to suggest a move to Paris Saint-Germain or a switch back to Real Madrid, but even Chelsea or Arsenal would be better fits right now for the 27-year-old.

Di Maria had an excellent start to his Premier League career but has cooled off significantly in the past few months, one of several key summer signings who haven't lived up to the expectations.

He's scored just three goals in the Premier League so far, per WhoScored.com, and via World Soccer Talk, Monday's debacle was arguably the worst moment we've seen from the forward in the iconic kit of United:

That said, the suggestion Di Maria has to leave after just a single season in the Premier League is premature. He's certainly not the first big star to struggle in his first season, adapting to a new league and style of play.

The Red Devils as a whole have looked out of sync at times, and while it's easy to place the blame on the top stars like Di Maria, other players and the manager have to share responsibility.

But there are plenty of other voices who believe the winger should move on to save his career besides Parker. The Daily Mirror's Nooruddean Choudry even went as far as to suggest the club has "broken" him:

It would be a shock to see Di Maria depart the club just one year after joining—particularly with his value at an all-time low—and for the sake of his confidence, one must hope the messages from pundits and other writers become a bit more positive in the coming weeks.

Should the star winger depart the club, it seems unlikely Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne would be a possible replacement. As reported by the Daily Mirror's Liam Corless, the manager of the Bundesliga outfit, Dieter Hecking, is fairly certain the Belgium international won't be going anywhere.

He told Sky 90: "Kevin De Bruyne is very happy here. I don't see him leaving us in the summer."

The former Chelsea man is enjoying a fantastic season with Wolfsburg, orchestrating from midfield and frequently mixing it up in the box. Per Squawka's Dave, that has led to some remarkable results:

The young Belgian is a fine technician with the physical ability to play in a high-paced system, and he's a willing defender and set-piece specialist for both Wolfsburg and the national team.

He wouldn't come cheap given his great success in Germany, however, and his first Premier League stint didn't exactly go as planned. United may be wary to throw a chunk of cash at a player who may not be built for the English game, and it would be a safer option to let him stay in Germany for one more year and see whether he keeps up his high level of play.
