Dallas Re-Signs Doug Free
Monday, March 9
Offensive linemen might not be the sexiest players on the field, but they were important for the Cowboys last season. Dallas made sure to lock up one of the best linemen in front of Tony Romo by re-signing Doug Free.
Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com noted the Cowboys signed him to a three-year deal worth $15 million with $6 million guaranteed.
The offensive tackle started in all 16 games over three seasons before playing in only 11 games in 2014 due to injuries. If he can remain effective in the trenches, Romo can shine again for the surging Cowboys offense.
With youth and strength on the offensive line with Zack Martin and Tyron Smith, keeping a veteran like Free seems to be the best option for the Cowboys.
Sterling Moore Reportedly Will Not Be Tendered
Saturday, March 7
Over the weekend, the Cowboys made a difficult decision by deciding not to tender Sterling Moore. Archer reported Dallas will allow the cornerback to sign elsewhere as a free agent.
The defensive back started in seven games for the Cowboys in 2014 and played in all 16 games during the regular season. Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram offered his take on the move for the franchise:
Dallas' defense was much improved in 2014, and Moore was an important piece of that success. Though he started only seven contests, Moore helped fill in the gaps for injured players and did so admirably. The 25-year-old corner might become a hot commodity for teams in need of help in the secondary.
Cole Beasley Signs Extension
Tuesday, March 3
Wide receiver Cole Beasley signed a long-term deal with the Cowboys. The slot receiver confirmed his four-year deal with Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan:
Beasley wasn't as productive as Bryant, but he's still an effective piece for Dallas. Romo utilized Beasley on third downs on a regular basis, as Ed Werder of ESPN notes:
For a team looking to reach the playoffs again, having a clutch player like Beasley will be crucial. His value might not always be evident, but bringing back Beasley was critical for Romo. Cowboys fans can rely on Beasley for another four years thanks to his latest deal.
Cowboys Franchise Dez Bryant
Monday, March 2
The first domino fell when the Cowboys put a franchise tag on Dez Bryant. A first-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft, Bryant has emerged as the team's leading receiver, with at least 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns over the last three years.
Bryant became the first Cowboys receiver to be franchised. Executive Vice President Stephen Jones said the team is still working on a long-term deal for the receiver, per SiriusXM NFL Radio:
On the heels of a career high in touchdowns (16) last year, it's clear that Bryant is a huge priority for Dallas.
