Breaking News!! Colt McCoy Wins 2009 Heisman Trophy

Christopher GorilAug 19, 2009

The three Heisman Trophy finalists strutted into the Nokia Theater in Times Square last night, bringing back a feeling of deja vu.

Florida's Tim Tebow (2007 winner), Oklahoma's Sam Bradford (2008 winner), and Colt McCoy from the University of Texas were back in New York for the second straight year yesterday.

Since that time it seems that not much has changed.

Tebow and Bradford have led their respective teams to a pair of one loss seasons, followed by one more conference title a piece, and capped with a rematch in this year's BCS National Championship game.

As for McCoy, a one loss season, including a victory against the aforementioned Bradford and yet once again no invitation to the big show at the end of the bowl season.

Deja vu indeed.  Except for one thing...

Colt McCoy is your newest Heisman winner.  The only person happier than McCoy on this night was Archie Griffin, still your only 2-time winner.  Despite two previous winners in the final three, Griffin beat the odds...or did he?

The Heisman voters had decided this outcome long before last night.  This outcome was decided last year at about the time Sam Bradford was announced as the 2008 winner.

In a disturbing trend, the voters have seemed to take into account past seasons votes in determining the Heisman winner.

With the numbers and production of the top three finalists very similar to one another, voters took a "its his turn" approach to this years vote.  McCoy received 2,909 votes, the most ever for a Heisman winner.

McCoy had an incredible season, but so did Tebow and Bradford.  The three comparable stat lines do not justify the vote disparity.

In order of Heisman finish (Comp. %; Yds; TDs; Int):

  1. Colt McCoy - 74.3; 4162; 38; 9
  2. Sam Bradford - 65.4; 3875; 41; 13
  3. Tim Tebow - 68.9; 3147; 34 (17 rush); 7
The equivalence of these numbers just goes to show how special the last two years of college football have been.  With these three elite quarterbacks each leaving the college game with a Heisman trophy and a combined three national championships we have been blessed.
The next time that we see these three on the same stage will probably be in a little over four months when they compete to be the first quarterback taken in the NFL draft.
Even though the vote total cast a shadow on McCoy's victory, he nonetheless deserved to win.  And maybe it was okay that the vote had already been decided before a snap was taken this season.
Because heck - it was Colt McCoy's turn.
