Irbe Becomes Capitals New Goaltending Coach
Late last week the Washington Capitals brought on board former NHL goalie Arturs Irbe to be their new goalie coach. This 42 year-old who had a stellar 13 year career with the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks and the Carolina Hurricanes will be taking over for Dave Prior who stepped down after spending 12 years in that position. In his NHL career Irbe ended up with 218 wins and played in the 1994 and 1999 All Star Games. Last season this 42 year-old who also had a career 2.83 GAA was involved in the Kontinental Hockey League where he worked as the goaltending coach in Latvia for Dinamo Riga.
D’Agostini Re-Signs With The Canadiens
Coming off an impressive season the Montreal Canadiens have decided to re-signed 22 year-old forward Matt D’Agostini to a one year two -way contract. This former 2005 six round draft choice impressed management last year when he notched nine goals and 12 assists in 53 games with the Canadiens. In the American Hockey League this 6 foot 200 pounder scored 14 goals and 11 assists in only 20 games. If he spends the entire season in the NHL then D’Agostini will earn $500,000.
Smid Signs Two- Year Deal With Edmonton
Last week the Edmonton Oilers locked up one of their young players when they signed 23 year-old Ladislav Smid to a two- year contract. Smid who came to Edmonton in July 2006 from the Anaheim Ducks has played his entire career in Edmonton where he has recorded three goals 22 assists and 152 P.I.M. in 202 career games. “I’m very pleased to have Ladislav signed,” Oilers GM Steve Tambellini said. “He’s a very competitive young defenceman that has the ability to contribute in all situations
