Former 4-Star LB Kain Daub to Transfer from Florida State to JUCO
One of Florida State's top recruits from the 2014 class will never see the field for the Seminoles, as linebacker Kain Daub plans to transfer to a junior college.
The announcement was made official Thursday by FSU coach Jimbo Fisher, per Brendan Sonnone of the Orlando Sentinel:
Daub was a 4-star prospect in 2014 out of Jacksonville, rated by 247Sports as the No. 73 overall prospect and the fourth-best inside linebacker in the 2014 class. He redshirted last season, and although he enrolled early, he missed spring practice because of an NCAA clearinghouse issue, according to Andrew Holleran of College Spun.
Holleran reported that Daub posted on his Instagram page, which is private, that he plans to attend East Mississippi Junior College in 2015.
"The move is not entirely unexpected, as Daub battled major conditioning and other discipline issues during his short time," wrote Bud Elliott of Tomahawk Nation.
Daub chose FSU over Alabama, committing in April 2013 after Jeremy Pruitt left the Crimson Tide staff to become the Seminoles' defensive coordinator, according to Corey Dowlar of NoleNation (h/t ESPN). Pruitt ended up leaving FSU after the 2013 season to become Georgia's defensive coordinator.
While Daub's departure shouldn't have an impact on Florida State during the season, it does leave it thin at the position during the spring. Leading tackler Reggie Northrup is recovering from ACL surgery, leaving the Seminoles with five linebackers for spring practice.
Overall, though, FSU should be just fine for the fall. Assuming Northrup returns healthy, all three starters will return, as well as several reserves who saw action in 2014, most notably sophomores Jacob Pugh and Matthew Thomas. The Seminoles also signed two 4-star linebackers (Sh'mar Kilby-Lane and junior college transfer Lorenzo Phillips) in the 2015 class.
