Chiefs to Release Bowe

Thursday, March 12

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Chiefs will release Bowe Thursday.

On March 10, Schefter had reported that "indications point to" the Chiefs cutting ties with Bowe this week.

Bowe has been an important part of Kansas City's offense since he was selected in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft, but his production has clearly dipped in recent years.

With the 30-year-old former Pro Bowler seemingly in decline, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport stated on March 5 that he expected the Chiefs to either trade or release Bowe:

No K.C. wide receiver caught a touchdown in 2014. While Bowe did reel in 60 passes for 754 yards, he simply didn't get the job done as quarterback Alex Smith's supposed No. 1 target.

One can only assume that the Chiefs will address their receiver issues via free agency or the 2015 NFL draft. Bowe is slated to have a $14 million cap hit in 2015, and he is signed through the 2017 campaign, according to Spotrac.com.

Expunging that contract would be significant for Kansas City since it would allow the organization to search for better options.

Bowe is still good enough to play and produce in the NFL as a complementary guy, but he simply doesn't do enough to warrant his massive contract.
