Dockett talked about his decision, per Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports, Kent Somers of AZCentral.com and Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site:
Upon learning the news of Dockett's departure, Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu shared his shock and surprise on Twitter:
You can understand where Mathieu is coming from. Dockett spent his entire career in Arizona before the team released him on February 27.
Per Darren Urban of the Cardinals website, general manager Steve Keim said this decision was purely business related and that the team hoped to bring him back at a reduced cost:
"We have been very clear about our feelings for Darnell and our desire to have him back.
After speaking with him and his representatives, we decided that this move today makes the most sense for both the team and the player and allows each to keep all of its options open.
"
Given the option to match the 49ers' offer, per Jurecki, the Cardinals couldn't make it happen:
Dockett, who was drafted by Arizona in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft, has recorded 40.5 sacks in his career. He became expendable after missing the entire 2014 season due to a torn ACL suffered in a preseason practice.
Despite the injury, Dockett isn't lacking for confidence. Days before he was released, when the two sides were trying to work on a restructured deal, the former Florida State star issued this tweet:
The 49ers get a low-cost boost to their defensive line as well as an alternative option in the event Justin Smith decides to retire.
