Brendan Sorsby's CFL Eligibility Updated After NFL Declines to Hold 2026 Supplemental Draft

Joseph ZuckerJun 26, 2026

The Canadian Football League confirmed Friday that teams will be unable to sign former college quarterback Brenda Sorsby ahead of the 2026 season.

The league told USA Today's Paul Myerberg in a statement that "upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL."

"At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list," the CFL said.

Having left Texas Tech, Sorsby intended to enter his name in the NFL supplemental draft, only for the league to decide against staging the event.

Now, the 22-year-old is facing a scenario where he has to wait until the 2027 NFL draft before he can suit up in the pros, and he doesn't log any meaningful snaps before then.

A district judge deemed Sorsby eligible to play another year in college as he remained the focus of an NCAA investigation. However, the general outcry around the sport made his continued presence in Lubbock, Texas, all but untenable.

Sorsby renounced his college eligibility in declaring for the supplemental draft, so the door back to an FBS or even FCS school is closed. Myerberg also noted the UFL concluded its 2026 season earlier this month, so that's off the table for now too.

The CFL left little room for doubt with Friday's statement.

Junior college is pretty much the only path for Sorsby if he wants to play this year. Otherwise, he can spend the time between now and the 2027 draft training and working with quarterback specialists.

Multiple reporters suggested Sorsby could've gone in the second round of the supplemental draft, which would've required a team to forfeit its second-rounder in 2027. If not quite that high, the odds of an NFL team picking him looked pretty strong.

Sorsby started 24 games across two seasons at Cincinnati, throwing for 5,613 yards and 45 touchdowns while running for 1,027 yards and 18 scores.
