Dynamo Dresden vs. Borussia Dortmund: Winners and Losers from DFB Cup Game

Jerrad PetersMar 3, 2015

Borussia Dortmund are into the quarter-final round of the 2014-15 DFB Pokal thanks to a pair of Ciro Immobile goals at Dynamo Dresden on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half, Dortmund made a bright start to the second period and found themselves a goal to the good after Dynamo defender Michael Hefele accidentally played Immobile through to open the scoring.

Then, in the final minute of normal time, the Italian marksman rounded out the scoring after accepting Jakub Blaszczykowski's fine pass from the right.

Following are some of the individual winners and losers from the encounter.

Winner: Mitch Langerak, Who Bailed out Mats Hummels

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels almost gifted Dynamo Dresden an equaliser in the 53rd minute but was bailed out by his goalkeeper.

Just three minutes after Ciro Immobile had opened the scoring for the guests, Justin Eilers stripped Hummels of possession and broke in alone on the Dortmund goal.

Mitch Langerak, however, was equal to it and stuck out his leg to make the important save.

"Hummels slips, Eilers in, #MightyMitch saves. That was close," tweeted DW-Sports.

Loser: Marco Reus, Who Hobbled off Injured

Marco Reus just can't seem to stay healthy.

The Borussia Dortmund attacker suffered his latest in a long line of injuries Tuesday, when he was sliced to the ground by Dynamo Dresden defender Dennis Erdmann.

Struggling to put any weight on his hurt leg, the Germany international hobbled down the tunnel and was replaced in the 24th minute by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

"Disaster for Dortmund. Marco Reus hobbles from the pitch and looks in pain," tweeted the Bundesliga's official account.

But Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp suggested the injury was not as bad as first suspected and was quoted by Alec Fenn of Goal.com as saying, "If it is really just a bruise with Marco, this has been a good night."

He added, "I looked so angry because everybody looked at me like he had a broken leg. I am a simple person and if everybody looks at me like his leg is broken, I believe that. I hope next time they will inform me sooner when it's just a bruise."

Winners: The Traveling Borussia Dortmund Fans

3 of 6

Plenty of Borussia Dortmund fans made the trip to Dresden for Tuesday's cup tie, and they made themselves heard throughout the proceedings.

As the club's official Twitter account revealed, they also came equipped with some impressive choreography.

The Dortmund supporters have never wavered this season, despite the poor football their club has played for long stretches of it.

They were a significant part of Tuesday's win and will have to be similarly instrumental if Dortmund are to overturn their deficit in their upcoming Champions League match against Juventus.

Winner: Dennis Erdmann, Who Was Strong in Defense for Dresden

4 of 6

Dennis Erdmann should have been booked for his tackle on Marco Reus, but he wasn't, and moments after the collision, the Borussia Dortmund attacker was leaving the field.

That was Erdmann's most high-profile contribution to Tuesday's DFB Pokal match, but throughout the 90 minutes, the central defender kept the opposition attackers mostly at bay.

Had it not been for his partner, Michael Hefele, the hosts would have entered the final minutes on level terms with Dortmund, and under those circumstances, the result might have been quite different.

Loser: Michael Hefele, Who Gifted Dortmund the Winner

5 of 6

Late in the first half, Dynamo Dresden defender Michael Hefele escaped sanction for elbowing Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile in the face.

Immobile had to go to the sideline to receive treatment and didn't play another minute in the opening frame.

But shortly after the restart, the Italian got his revenge when, pouncing on Hefele's misplaced pass across the Dynamo defense, he proceeded to smash the ball into the back of the net for the opener.

Winner: Ciro Immobile, Who Bagged a Brace

Ciro Immobile needed a big performance on Tuesday, and he delivered it.

In the 50th minute, after recovering from a facial injury inflicted by Michael Hefele, the Borussia Dortmund striker intercepted a wayward Hefele pass before beating Dynamo Dresden goalkeeper Patrick Wiegers with a fine finish.

Then, in the final minute of normal time, he completed his brace after calmly accepting Jakub Blaszczykowski's pass from the right-hand side.

"Really big performance tonight from Ciro Immobile," tweeted DW-Sports. "Battled, worked hard and scored twice."
