Brian Bowles: Shocking the World One Fight at a Time
It was on Aug. 9, 2009 that history was made in the bantamweight division of the WEC. Long-time champion Miguel Torres was sporting a 37-1-0 professional MMA record, and was considered by many fans and Web sites as one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world.
Heading into WEC 42 with the bantamweight championship on the line, Brian Bowles was a heavy underdog against the champion. Bowles was also undefeated, sporting an impressive 7-0 record with every fight finished before the final bell.
Brian Bowles made history becoming the only fighter to actually stop Miguel Torres. And even did it in the very first round. Everybody in attendance and everybody watching at home was shocked at the turn of events that had just occurred.
Bowles became the new champion and Torres was left looking at the lights wondering what had just happened.
Now considered the best bantamweight fighter in the world, and considered the 10th best pound for pound fighter in the world by Sherdog.com, Brian Bowles' career has finally taken off.
Having made his WEC debut at WEC 28, Bowles dominated every contender on his way to getting a shot at the champion. His heavy hands have won him several fights, but Bowles also showed some good Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills with several submission victories.
Now that he is champion, we will see what Bowles is really made of, as his first test to prove he's a champion will be to defend that title.
It's safe to say that former champion Miguel Torres will likely get a rematch down the road and try to avenge that loss; whether he can do what Urijah Faber was unable to do against Mike Brown is unknown.
One thing is for sure, you can't count Brian Bowles out of a fight until the final bell has rung, as this fighter may very well continue to impress and shock the world fight after fight.
