Nick AkermanFeb 25, 2015

Day 12 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw Afghanistan etch their first-ever victory at the tournament in the history books.

Scotland set a measly score of 210, with Shapoor Zadran grabbing a quartet of wickets to waltz through the side's lower order. While Afghanistan left it late with the bat—posting 211/9 with three balls remaining—Samiullah Shenwari's 96 paved the way for a memorable two points.

In Thursday's later game, Tillakaratne Dilshan's excellent 161 led Sri Lanka to victory over Bangladesh by 92 runs, pushing them to second in the Pool A table.

Tillakaratne Dilshan's Unbeaten 161 Pushes Sri Lanka to Win over Bangladesh

3 of 4

Sri Lanka (332/1) bt. Bangladesh (240) by 92 runs.

Tillakaratne Dilshan struck a stunning knock of 161 from 146 balls to lead Sri Lanka beyond Bangladesh, a victory which suggests the island side are gathering momentum.

Dilshan attacked throughout, racking up 22 fours. He played assertive, risk-free cricket, capitalising on Bangladesh's inability to find regular wickets.

Rubel Hossain (1-62) was the only player on the losing side to dismiss a batsman, ending Lahiru Thirimanne's stand on 52.

Unfortunately for Bangladesh, Kumar Sangakkara fed off Dilshan's confidence with the bat, tallying 105 in 76 balls, including 13 fours and the side's only six. He brought up his century in confident style, per Sky Sports:

Sri Lanka's total of 332 always appeared difficult to catch, but when Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal was dismissed for a duck by the powerful Lasith Malinga, Marvan Atapattu's side asserted further control.

This was the first of three wickets for Malinga, who crucially eliminated Sabbir Rahman (53) and ended the day's play by routing Taskin Ahmed on his first ball. This moment was tweeted by Sky Sports:

Anamul Haque (29) and Soumya Sarkar (25) put up a limited fight for Bangladesh, while Shakib Al Hasan threatened to push the nation back into contention with a knock of 46 in the middle order.

Dilshan's efficiency with the bat filtered into confidence with the ball. He dismissed Shakib and Mashrafe Mortaza (1) to finish with figures of 2-35.

Surange Lakmal also grabbed two wickets, underlining a Sri Lanka side who have brushed away the cobwebs of their opening performance to secure two straight victories.

Samiullah Shenwari Leads Afghanistan to Historic World Cup Victory

4 of 4

Afghanistan (211/9) bt. Scotland (210) by one wicket

Afghanistan secured the first World Cup win in their history with a thrilling one-wicket victory over Scotland on Thursday.

The Asian side reached their target of 211 with just three balls remaining, leaving Scotland as Pool A's only winless outfit.

Samiullah Shenwari was the main inspiration for the victors, putting on an extremely important 96 from 147 balls. His team-mates fell rapidly around him, with Scotland initially reducing their opponents to 97/7.

Shenwari was the fourth man to the crease and the last of nine to drop. He hit seven fours and five sixes before Majid Haq finally claimed his scalp on one last attempt to smash over the boundary. Shenwari was able to look back and smile after the match, per ESPN Cricinfo:

"

— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) February 26, 2015

"

Afghanistan still needed 19 when Shenwari was dismissed, but Shapoor Zadran's four during the middle of the final over thrust them over the line.

ESPN Cricinfo detailed the vital moment:

"

What drama in the final three balls: a yorker squeezed out for 1, next proper No.11 running leading to near run-out, before game-sealing 4

— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) February 26, 2015"

Opener Javed Ahmadi put up the only other notable score for Afghanistan, grabbing 51 runs in as many balls, including eight fours. He fell to Richie Berrington after Nawroz Mangal (7) and Asghar Stanikzai (4) were dismissed by Alasdair Evans (30-2).

Berrington went on to capture another three wickets. Afsar Zazai couldn't put up any runs before Berrington's accuracy saw him depart via an leg-before-wicket (lbw) call, while Najibullah Zadran (4) and Dalwat Zadran (9) barely made an impact by the time the South African-born star struck again. He finished with numbers of 4-40.

In-form Josh Davey managed just one wicket on the day, ending Gulbadin Naib's hopes of making a lasting impression.

Scotland certainly left themselves open to being attacked after putting up a score of 210. The 300 mark is proving to be important in this tournament, but a pretty even spread of middling scores ensured the Scots once again fell short.

Calum MacLeod went for a duck to start the problems at 7/1, followed by Hamid Hassan dismissing Hamish Gardiner for seven. Kyle Coetzer offered some resistance—hitting 25 from 41 balls—but he was one of several players who failed to capitalise after playing himself in.

Dalmat took both Coetzer and Berrington for the same scores, with Matthew Machan posting Scotland's joint-best haul of 31. Once he and captain Preston Mommsen were taken by Mohammad Nabi, Matthew Cross (15) and Davey (1) were the first wickets of Shapoor, who snapped into life.

His brilliance throughout the day was highlighted by the ICC:

"

— ICC (@ICC) February 26, 2015"

Haq managed to equal Machan's 31, and Evans still had time to put up 28, but Shapoor took two wickets either side of Berrington's dismissal to finish with figures of 4-38. Scotland lasted the 50 overs, but as it transpired, they were still short of setting Afghanistan an unreachable score.
