Ohio State Football Recruiting Offers of the Week

David RegimbalMar 1, 2015

A week removed from offering 10 prospects for their 2016 class, Urban Meyer and Ohio State used the past seven days to look further down the road and develop their 2017 recruiting strategy.

In all, the Buckeyes sent out four scholarship offers, three of which were to '17 recruits.

Here's a rundown of Ohio State's offers from the week.

Carlos Becker, 3-Star Cornerback (2016)

What's it like to land scholarship offers from six major college football programs in the span of a week?

After last week, Carlos Becker can answer that question.

The 3-star corner out of Kissimmee, Florida, got offers from Florida, Florida State and Ohio State on Wednesday before closing out the week with offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Those schools joined a list that already included Boston College, Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State and others, and Becker took the big week as validation.

"Yeah, I guess I'm finally one of those guys that people talk about," Becker said, according to Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel.

Bill Kurelic of 247Sports reports that Becker recorded 56 tackles and three interceptions during a successful junior season. He's strong and physical enough to play press coverage, but he has the speed to break on the ball if he's lined up in zone.

If Becker continues to progress as a player, not only will his on-field production increase—his recruitment will hit another level, as well.

Khalan Laborn, Unranked All-Purpose Back (2017)

If Becker had the best week ever on the recruiting front, Khalan Laborn may have had the best day.

The sophomore all-purpose back out of Virginia Beach, Virginia, racked up big-time offers from Florida State, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Tennessee on Wednesday—serving as an early indication that he'll be one of the most highly recruited prospects in the '17 class.

But Meyer's success with all-purpose backs could set the Buckeyes apart. With Meyer featuring players such as Percy Harvin, Dontre Wilson and Jalin Marshall in such creative ways, it will be easy for the Buckeyes to pitch a unique vision to Laborn.

Tahj Capehart, Unranked Wide Receiver (2017)

Laborn was just the first of three Virginia prospects to land an offer from Ohio State last week.

The second went to sophomore wide receiver Tahj Capehart, who already has Arizona State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin vying for his commitment.

The 5'10", 170-pound pass-catcher has next-level speed, and his ability to stop-and-go at a moment's notice makes him a nightmare for defensive backs in the open field. The Buckeyes could utilize that speed on the perimeter with bubble screens, a play he's already executing at a high level.

The Buckeyes only signed two receivers in their 2015 class, so they'll be looking to load up on pass-catchers in 2016 and 2017. Look for Capehart to remain as one of their top targets.

Eric Crosby, Unranked Outside Linebacker (2017)

The Buckeyes' final offer of the week went out to Eric Crosby, an intriguing athlete from Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Already boasting offers from Clemson, Florida State, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Virginia Tech, schools like the versatility Crosby possesses. The 6'2", 260-pound standout is listed as an outside linebacker, but he has the frame to line up as a defensive end.

At least, that's the vision Ohio State is pitching.

“I think Ohio State likes me as an athlete, like everyone else,” Crosby said, according to Kurelic of 247Sports. “In college I think I’ll be a defensive end and maybe stand up sometimes.”

The Buckeyes love to drop their defensive ends into coverage. Against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Steve Miller made one of the plays of the game when he dipped in front of quick slant route and picked off a Blake Sims pass, which he returned 41 yards for a touchdown.

Crosby has the ability to do that, which is why the Buckeyes will be recruiting him hard for the next two years.
