Hope Solo on 'Good Morning America': Takeaways from Interview with Robin Roberts

Tim DanielsFeb 25, 2015

United States women's national team goalkeeper Hope Solo broke her silence about recent off-field problems in an interview with Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts. She discussed a "horrible choice" made during a team training camp and a family domestic dispute.

Solo was suspended for 30 days by U.S. Soccer after her husband Jerramy Stevens, a former NFL player, was arrested for DUI while reportedly driving a team vehicle last month. Around the same time, domestic assault charges against her were droppedShe originally made news for being arrested for domestic violence against her sister and 17-year-old nephew, per USA Today.

She told Roberts it was important for people to remember she's only human despite her high-profile status and that she understands there's room to grow:

Solo was asked what she was thinking while making the choices that led to Stevens' arrest. GMA's Suzan Clarke passed along her response.

"Well, clearly, I wasn't thinking. I mean, it was a horrible choice," she said. "I think I just wasn't in a good place, emotionally, to even make good decisions. I mean, it's not an excuse but I just, it was stupid. Should've called a taxi."

She also discussed the backlash U.S. Soccer received after choosing not to suspend her while the domestic abuse case played out.

"All of us, in my opinion, have a fundamental right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. ... I know U.S. Soccer took a lot of heat," Solo said. "But I am very grateful that they let due process play itself out. Those eight months were some of the worst months of my entire life."

TMZ notes Solo said she was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her 6'9" nephew on what she called a "very scary night." Following the comments, the nephew and his mother released a statement on the allegations.

"It does a disservice to domestic violence victims to suggest that one's physical size is a determinative of whether one is an abuser," it read.

Solo also commented on improving her image following the off-field issues, per Nicolas Mendola of Pro Soccer Talk:

"I want people to realize I'm just human. I'm just human and I make mistakes. I want people to be able to forgive me [if] they're willing to do so. I just want to be the best athlete I can be, the best person I can be and I know I have a lot of room for improvement."

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated passed along the full interview from ABC News:

Solo's suspension recently ended, and she was selected to the squad for the upcoming Algarve Cup by head coach Jill Ellis. The United States has struggled recently regardless of their star goalkeeper's status, winning just two of its last six matches (2-2-2).

Jeff Olson of USA Today provided comments from fellow national team stalwart Abby Wambach, who said the group would embrace Solo and focus on the future.

"Obviously she's an experienced veteran on the team," Wambach said. "Whenever somebody comes back, you have to welcome them with open arms, especially right now when we're in our push to the World Cup. We need our team to be at full strength. Whether it's injury or suspension, we want to take care of our teammates. This would be no different."

After the Algarve Cup, Team USA will only have a handful of friendlies left to prepare for the World Cup, which starts in June. The Americans' form will need to improve considerably if they want to make a serious run toward their third title in the event.

And, as Mendola reported: "US Soccer president Sunil Gulati has said that further actions by Solo could get her banned from the team for this summer's World Cup in Canada."

Solo can play a major role in any success as long as the off-field issues are no longer a distraction. She's one of the best goalkeepers in the women's game. Based on her interview with Roberts, she hopes to leave the incidents in the past and move forward with a busy schedule on the horizon.
