Final Thoughts on the 2009 PGA: Y.E. Yang overtakes Tiger Woods.

Jeffrey FannAug 16, 2009

Was this the biggest upset in the history of golf?I have to say it was the biggest since the 1955 U.S. Open when Jack Fleck took down the great Ben Hogan.

Consider Y.E. Yang was ranked 110th in the world, playing the No.1 player on the planet Tiger Woods. Woods was 14 for 14 entering the final round of a major golf tournament when he was tied for or had the lead alone.

Yang did what Mickelson, Els, Singh, Goosen, Harrington or any other player tour has been unable to do. He beat Tiger Woods on the final day of a major when Woods went in with the lead. It was unbelievable.

Here are some of my final thoughts on the tournament.

  • Is Yang a one hit wonder? He did win the Honda Classic earlier this year, so he's won twice on tour this year. Anyone that goes eye to eye with Tiger Woods, will be heard from again. His clutch hybrid 3-iron on the 18th hole will go down as one of the greatest golf shots of the decade. He's the first Asian golfer to ever win a major. Expect a major golf boom there.
  • Tiger goes majorless for the first time in five years. What does it mean? Well, he's still the No.1 player in the world by far, but he showed some nerves today. Seven or eight years ago some people predicted he could win 30-35 majors. That won't happen. He'll eventually get Nicklaus's record, but they are getting tougher for him to win. He'll finish with 18-22 total.
  • Keep an eye on 20 year old Rory McIlory of Ireland. He's the real deal. A solid T-3 finish in this year's PGA. His raw talent is limitless. Another young European to watch for is Martin Kaymer of Germany. He's won a couple of times in Europe this year and had a T-6 at Hazeltine. He's only 24.
  • When is Lee Westwood going to win a major? He's been so close so many times. Another top five finish for Westwood. It's going to happen for him eventually.
  • Good to see Ernie Els finish in the top 10. If he could have got the putter going, he could have really contended.
  • Phil Mickelson never contended this week. I expect he will come back next year refreshed and recharged, after tough 2009 personally for him.
  • A MC for Sergio Garcia, and I beginning to wonder if at only 29 years old, his best days are behind him. He's got plenty time of left to win a major, but 2009 was not good year for him. Is he even the best Spanish golfer anymore? Alvaro Quiros hits it a mile, and if he works on that short game, there is no telling how good he can be.
  • That was the most fun I've had watching a golf tournament in a long time.
