Daytona 500 2015 Results: Top Finishers, Analysis for 57th Great American Race

Matt FitzgeraldFeb 22, 2015

Joey Logano took the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, claiming victory in the 57th running of the Great American Race.

The 24-year-old prodigy delivered the ultimate prize for Team Penske in the No. 22 car, winning his maiden Daytona 500.

Logano evidently used his career-best 2014 campaign as a springboard and parlayed it into the biggest win of his young, promising career.

Check out the top finishers from Sunday's action, as Logano edged out 2007 race winner Kevin Harvick. Complete results can be viewed at NASCAR's official website:

1Joey Logano
2Kevin Harvick1.006
3Dale Earnhardt Jr.1.193
4Denny Hamlin1.761
5Jimmie Johnson2.102
6Casey Mears2.578
7Clint Bowyer2.779
8Martin Truex Jr.3.167
9Kasey Kahne3.340
10Greg Bifle3.373

Speaking of carryover, Harvick did a commendable job of that himself. After winning the Chase for the Sprint Cup last season, he nearly became ultra greedy and nabbed his second Daytona 500 win.

The thrilling finish was set up by an adjustment to race protocol—one of the successful enhancements NASCAR has offered its drivers, crews and fans—per NASCAR Stats:

But the chance to go green again backfired. Not long after the white flag was raised for the final lap, a massive wreck behind the leaders caused the race to end under caution anyway.

Reigning champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. did a fine job defending. USA Today's Jeff Gluck observed how Earnhardt faced late-race adversity:

However, Earnhardt managed to climb back into the top three, doing a commendable job in his effort to pull off a rare back-to-back. ESPN Stats & Info alluded to how seldom it occurs:

DaleJr.com's Mike Davis brought up Earnhardt's remarkable consistency:

As is customary, Jimmie Johnson loomed large and notched a top-five finish after leading a race-best 39 laps. Johnson finished just behind last year's Daytona 500 runner-up Denny Hamlin, making for quite the star-studded headliners.

NASCAR has made changes to the Chase in recent years to make the end of the season more exciting. While that and the theoretically caution-free conclusions to races have worked, the tactical gamble to revamp Daytona 500 qualifying has been met with considerable backlash.

Multiple cars wrecked in the inaugural format, and Clint Bowyer was among those displeased by the change, per NASCAR.com's Zack Albert:

"

[...] We need to be focused on qualifying and who's going to sit on the pole for the biggest race of the year and the front row, just like we always have. There's no reason to be putting a show on and trying to make something out of stuff that doesn't need to be. We put on a hell of a show on for the Daytona 500 and unfortunately these guys have worked the last six months for nothing.

"

Bowyer may have a point for NASCAR to consider, but the Daytona 500 itself lived up to the hype yet again as the most prestigious individual stock car auto race.

A lot of credit must go to Bowyer and his team. They overcame the adversity that beset them in qualifying to finish in the top five in the end. It leaves one to wonder what Bowyer may have done in his original car—and whether he'd have fared quite as well as he did.

Logano, Bowyer and anyone who finished near the front have plenty of momentum to carry forward at the dawn of the 2015 season.

The level of skill many of the best drivers displayed showed that it's anyone's Chase to win, but gaining valuable points this early on such a big stage in Daytona Beach can be invaluable in setting the tone for the rest of the year.

The triumph for Logano is a big step forward, as he is indeed establishing himself as NASCAR's next big star. With just one top 10 in six prior Daytona 500 appearances, no one can question Logano's driving chops in the grandest race of all.
