Manchester United Transfer News: Rumours on Lucas Biglia, Paul Pogba, More

Gianni VerschuerenFeb 21, 2015

Manchester United are reportedly looking at Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia as an experienced transfer option during the summer window, according to the Daily Mirror's John Cross.

The 29-year-old Argentina international, who has developed into one of the Italian team's most pivotal players, was reportedly already a target in January and could now be in line for a move to Old Trafford at the conclusion of the current campaign:

"

Manchester United are tracking Argentinian midfielder Lucas Biglia as a potential summer target.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the 29-year-old who would cost around £8m this summer.

The Lazio midfielder is vastly experienced and United were interested in January but his club refused to consider letting him go.

Biglia spent the bulk of his career in Belgium, playing for Anderlecht, before completing a move to the Italian capital in 2013. The veteran is still remembered very fondly in Brussels, as shared by this Twitter fan account:

The midfielder is a versatile option with plenty of ability both as a ball-winner and playmaker, and while he's not the type of signing that would excite fans at first, his status as a regular for the Argentina national team should convince you he's an underrated performer.

For the right fee, which would likely be under £10 million when all is said and done, Biglia could be a great value signing who will provide depth in all central areas of midfield and has the potential to be a capable starter if needed.

Rivals Manchester City are reportedly ready to battle Chelsea and Real Madrid for former United star Paul Pogba, per Manchester Evening News' James Robson. He believes the Red Devils are no longer prioritising bringing the France international back to Old Trafford:

"

Manchester City will battle it out with Real Madrid and Chelsea for Paul Pogba after United cooled their interest in the Juventus midfielder.

The Premier League champions are one of a host of Europe’s top clubs tracking the French international.

MEN Sport exclusively revealed that United are ready to abandon their hunt for the 21-year-old, who left Old Trafford for Italy in 2012.

Real are understood to be leading the chase for Pogba, whose agent Mino Raiola claims will demand a world-record fee if he leaves Juve.

"

Agent Mino Raiola revealed he expects his client will cost at least €100 million when he does leave Juventus in an interview with Marca (h/t footballespana):

The 21-year-old midfielder is expected to leave the Bianconeri at some point in the near future, and once it becomes clear he's ready to move on, just about every top club in Europe will be calling Raiola. That naturally includes City, but it would be shocking if United and Paris Saint-Germain didn't join the queue.

The Red Devils know exactly what he brings to the table and are in dire need of another ace midfielder—PSG have shown a keen interest in bringing young French talent to the capital, and Pogba was born in a suburb of Paris.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson ranks Les Parisiens as the top contender for his signature, and it's not hard to see why:

Of course City will jump at the chance of signing Pogba, if the club's situation under financial fair play allows it, but if United didn't inquire about the youngster themselves it would be a surprise.

Finally, Metro's John Harvey reports Ron Vlaar's contract negotiations with Aston Villa are not going smoothly at all, alerting the Red Devils that the Dutch international could be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

New Villans manager Tim Sherwood still hopes the veteran stays in Birmingham, but even he is unsure what's going on between the player and the club right now:

"

I’m not sure what the club have done with that. Obviously the club want to keep their best players. I’m sure the club will endeavour to try and keep Ron.

It’s not really for now. The focus is picking the right team and Ron focusing on playing and doing the best for the club.

"

The 30-year-old Vlaar played under Louis van Gaal during the 2014 World Cup, helping the Dutch side pick up third place in Brazil but injuries have all but ruined his 2014-15 Premier League campaign.

Those injuries could scare potential suitors away, but as a free agent, the experienced centre-back is worth the risk. With minimal investment required, bringing in a Premier League veteran is never a bad idea, even if he's only available for half of your team's matches.
