R. Cory SmithFeb 21, 2015

Anticipation has been building for nearly a year, and it's finally almost here. Following an intense Speedweeks, the 2015 Daytona 500 is just one day away.

There are storylines abound for NASCAR's equivalent to the Super Bowl.

During his final full-time season, Jeff Gordon is on the pole and looks like one of the fastest cars. Along with Gordon, Hendrick dominates the top two rows with both Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. up front. Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs Racing has hopes of overtaking them for its first win since 1993.

One of the biggest stories of the offseason surrounded Kurt Busch and his alleged domestic-assault case brought on by ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. On Friday, Busch was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR.

NASCAR.com's Zack Albert passed along the news:

"

Given the serious nature of the findings and conclusions made by the Commissioner of the Family Court of the State of Delaware, NASCAR has indefinitely suspended driver Kurt Busch, effective immediately. He will not be allowed to race nor participate in any NASCAR activities until further notice.

Kurt Busch and his Stewart-Haas Racing team are fully aware of our position and why this decision was made. We will continue to respect the process and timetable of the authorities involved.

"

In his place, Regan Smith was announced as the replacement for the No. 41 machine, via Jay Pennell of Fox Sports. Smith won the Xfinity Series race at Daytona last February and has one win and 11 top 10s over 172 races at the Sprint Cup level.

Matthew Dillner of NASCAR.com offered his take on the move for Smith:

While Smith will simply hope to put together an admirable run for SHR, one driver who will have the spotlight firmly on him is Earnhardt. The Hendrick driver won his second Daytona 500 last year and is in search of another.

His position greatly improved on Thursday night thanks to winning the first Budweiser Duel. By virtue of that victory, Junior will start third on the second row behind his teammates. He still knows he has some hard work to repeat, but is happy with his car, via Dustin Long of NBC Sports:

"

Winning the Daytona 500 is a real challenge. The challenge didn’t get easier tonight. ... I’m just excited to be able to put this car on the grid for Sunday. I wouldn’t want to be driving anything else.  The car’s so spectacular, it’s just going to be great.

It finishes a lot of moves. It kind of surprised me. It does a couple things that surprised me out there in the race. So I felt like the car made the job a lot easier.

"

In order to pull off the daunting feat of going back to back, Earnhardt won't just have to overtake Gordon and Johnson.

Just behind him will be an entire contingent of JGR drivers hoping to take the crown. Matt Kenseth, a two-time winner himself, already won the Sprint Unlimited. Carl Edwards has looked fast all week, along with teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin.

It's been a Chevrolet-dominated week, and it might very well stay that way if Hendrick has anything to do with it.
