Day 7 Standout Performers
7 of 7
Record-Setting Southee
There is absolutely no doubt about the standout bowler on Friday. Tim Southee's figures of 7-33 are the third best in the World Cup's history, per ESPN Cricinfo.
In a devastating exhibition of swing bowling on a good pitch, Southee saw to both of England's openers, clean bowling Ian Bell and Moeen Ali alike.
He then tore through England's middle and lower order to pick up seven in the innings, only the fourth man to do so at a World Cup; no one has eight in a single match.
Southee now sits atop the table for most tournament wickets in 2015 as well as having the best figures of the competition so farโwhether he will be beaten on the latter count seems unlikely.
Daniel Vettori also performed well, his frugal bowling going for only 19 runs off seven overs, while he dismissed England skipper Eoin Morgan.
England's was a performance largely devoid of merit, but Chris Woakes's figures were more than respectable, collecting as he did two wickets for eight runs from his three overs.
Brilliantย Brendon McCullum
Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum was wasting no time in chasing down the pitiful 124 target England had set for New Zealand.
He set another record by scoring the fastest World Cup half-centuryโoff 18 ballsโand he was on his way to a rapid century before being bowled by Woakes for 77 from just 25 balls.
Steven Finn took the brunt of some huge hitting from McCullum, the English paceman going for 49 runs from two overs.
Finn went for six maximums off McCullum, four of them coming in succession at the end of his second over.ย
It was something of a come down for the Englishman after his hat-trick and five-wicket haul in the opener against Australia, but McCullum's was a very impressive performance.
Only Joe Root put in a respectable display with the bat for England, the 24-year-old scoring 46 before becoming the Kiwis' final victim as he skied the ball in an attempt to salvage the innings.
