Sri Lanka vs. Afghanistan: Date, Live Stream, TV Info, Cricket World Cup Preview

Rory MarsdenFeb 20, 2015

World Cup debutants Afghanistan take on Sri Lanka in Dunedin on Sunday, with both teams looking to pick up a victory after losing their respective openers.

Sri Lanka are certainly the favourites for the Pool A clash, but they were blown away by New Zealand in the tournament's opening match and could be vulnerable.

Afghanistan were far from embarrassed in defeat to Bangladesh, but their batting must improve if they are to compete on Sunday.

Sri Lanka's opener against New Zealand did not go anything like to plan, their impressive bowling attack conceding 331 runs before they were all out for 233 in response.

The ineffectiveness of Sri Lanka's bowling attack is a cause for concern, particularly as Lasith Malinga, one of the world's best ODI bowlers, did not take a wicket against the Kiwis and conceded stacks of runs, per ESPN Cricinfo's Thilak Gowda:

However, the Black Caps have one of the best batting units in world cricket, not something that can be said for Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka's bowlers should therefore be more effective on Sunday, and they should pick up a whole raft of confidence-building wickets.

Indeed, Afghanistan's showing of 162 all out against Bangladesh suggests they may really struggle against the likes of Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Angelo Mathews, Rangana Herath and Jeevan Mendis.

Batting was always going to be an issue for the Afghans, per cricket writer Peter Miller, and they will have to rely on their bowling attack if they are to have any chance of beating Sri Lanka:

Shapoor ZadranAftab Alam and Hamid Hassan all have the ability to cause Sri Lanka problems, and they had Bangladesh 119-4 at one point in their opener before Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan kicked on.

Realistically, though, Sri Lanka should run out easy winners. As well as a strong bowling attack they have experience in their batting lineup.

Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan are two of the best ODI batsmen around, while Mahela Jayawardene is capable of heavy scoring on any occasion.

Such batsmen will likely relish the challenge of Afghanistan and the chance to erase the memory of their crushing defeat to the Kiwis, and Sri Lanka have a great opportunity to get some points on the board in the competition.
