New Zealand Crush Pitiful England in Wellington

3 of 3

New Zealand (125/2) bt. England (123 all out) by eight wickets.

England were thrashed by eight wickets by a fantastic New Zealand side in Wellington on Friday, their second humiliating defeat in their first two matches at the 2015 World Cup.

Kiwi bowler Tim Southee ended with figures of 7-33—a national record per Sky Sports News HQ—as New Zealand tore into the English batting lineup, Joe Root's 46 the only vaguely respectable individual score as they were bowled out for 123 in 33.2 overs:

Brendon McCullum then led the charge as the Black Caps began their easy chase, the skipper smashing an 18-ball half century—the fastest ever in a World Cup—as New Zealand reached the target in less than 13 overs.

As a result, New Zealand now have three wins from three and sit atop Pool A having effectively already booked their place in the first knockout round.

England, meanwhile, sit rock bottom of the group, and must turn things around in their next fixture against Scotland, a match they are by no means guaranteed to win.

Eoin Morgan won the toss on Friday and elected to bat on what looked to be a terrific pitch.

However, Southee swung the ball from the off and caused the English batsmen all kinds off problems, openers Ian Bell and Moeen Ali both bowled inside the first seven overs.

Gary Ballance soon followed to the bowling of Trent Boult to leave England 57-3, before Root and Morgan stabilised the ship somewhat with a partnership of 47.

The captain's dismissal at the hands of spinner Daniel Vettori, though, really started the rot, as Southee then saw off James Taylor, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Steven Finn, not one of whom scored more than four runs.

Root was the last to go, top-edging to long leg off Adam Milne's bowling as he understandably went for a big shot, England's last seven wickets falling for just 19 runs.

It was an abject display from England's batsmen, but Southee's was a splendid performance of swing bowling at its best, per Australian legend Shane Warne:

"

Feeling for Eng fans as that was a soft display. NZ were outstanding as Southee put on an exhibition of swing bowling,KP, Stokes & Bopara ?

— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) February 20, 2015"

New Zealand were straight out to bat, McCullum flying out of the blocks as he looked to finish things of in double-quick time.

His second ball from Broad went for six before he started his assault on Finn's bowling, the Kiwi skipper hitting four maximums from one of the English paceman's two overs—he went for 49 runs in total.

McCullum was on track for the fastest ever ODI hundred before he was bowled by Woakes for 77, his knock coming off just 25 balls with seven sixes and eight fours.

Bizarrely, per ByTheMin Cricket, the players left the field for a 45 minute lunch break with New Zealand needing just 12 runs to win:

"

Good news for England as the absurd decision to take the players off for lunch distracts from their display today.

— ByTheMin Cricket (@ByTheMinCricket) February 20, 2015"

When the players returned, Woakes picked up the wicket of Martin Guptill for 22, leaving Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor to complete the most emphatic of victories.

It was impressive from New Zealand, who only added to their credentials as genuine contenders for this year's World Cup.

England, on the other hand, will need to pick themselves up and turn their form around significantly if they are even to make it out of the group.
