Kurt Busch originally qualified to start on the outside of the 12th row, but NASCAR officially suspended Busch indefinitely for "actions detrimental to stock car racing." According to ESPN.com's Bob Pockrass, the decision came after a Delaware court ruled Busch likely attacked his ex-girlfriend last September.
Stewart-Haas Racing announced on Friday that Regan Smith will take Busch's spot in the Daytona 500.
Going back to Thursday, one of the biggest stories coming out of the duels surrounded a wreck involving Denny Hamlin and Danica Patrick. It was the second time this week the two were in an accident, which only served to heighten emotions.
The problems began after Hamlin seemed to bump into the rear of Patrick's car, which sent the No. 10 spinning:
Patrick spoke about the crash with Fox Sports 1 after the race:
Hamlin denied any culpability on social media:
USA Today's Jeff Gluck noted at the time how much was on the line for Patrick:
She recovered well to finish 10th in the second duel, thus earning a place in the Daytona 500. She'll start on the outside of Row 10, next to Cole Whitt.
Hamlin, meanwhile, had to settle for 18th on Thursday, which means he'll start out in 42nd for Sunday's race. Patrick may have been fuming immediately after duel No. 2, but she got the last laugh.
Jenna Fryer of The Associated Press noted how Patrick will still be in a tough position for the race after seeing two of her cars damaged:
In terms of the duel results themselves, Hendrick Motorsports made a clean sweep, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the first and Jimmie Johnson taking home the second. According to ESPN Stats & Info, it's only the second time in Daytona 500 history that one team will occupy the first three spots:
Earnhardt singled out his spotter for praise after his victory, per Nate Ryan of USA Today:
According to NASCAR.com, drivers in the top row have won 16 of the 56 Daytona 500s, and the number rises to 27 when including drivers who started in the top five.
Since Hendrick Motorsports currently owns three of the top five spots, it wouldn't be surprising if the team is triumphant in "The Great American Race."
The 2015 Daytona 500 is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 22 , at Daytona International Speedway, with Fox providing the television coverage.
