Georgia Football: The Bulldogs' Top 5 2015 NFL Draft Prospects

Brian JonesFeb 19, 2015

Georgia normally does a good job of getting players to the NFL. Some of the top players in the league spent their college careers in Athens, such as Justin Houston, Charles Johnson, Thomas Davis, A.J. Green and Geno Atkins.

This year should be no different because there are some talented Bulldogs who are looking to help NFL teams in need. But who is the best prospect? Who will be the first Bulldogs taken when draft day arrives?

Here’s a look at the Bulldogs’ top five NFL draft prospects.

No. 5: WR Chris Conley

1 of 5

Chris Conley had a productive senior season in 2014, catching 36 passes for 657 yards and eight touchdowns. Conley runs smooth routes, and he can make the tough catches.

There are receivers in this draft who are faster than Conley, but he does have enough acceleration when getting challenged upfield. Out of all the receivers on the Bulldogs roster the last few years, Conley has been the most consistent, and NFL scouts will notice the way he was able to produce in a run-first offense.

No. 4: CB Damian Swann

2 of 5

Damian Swann was able to finish his career in Athens on a strong note as he notched 65 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. Swann was able to be physical in run support, and he was also able to cover big receivers and tight ends from the slot.

Because he has a smallish frame (5’11’’, 180 lbs), Swann may not be able to start at safety full time. And because he does not play tight enough in coverage, he may not be able to be an everyday cornerback. But he’s very competitive and versatile, and that could be enough for him to make a team.

No. 3: ILB Amarlo Herrera

3 of 5

Amarlo Herrera emerged as one of the best inside linebackers in the SEC. He led the Bulldogs with 115 tackles and 10 tackles for loss. At 6’2’’ and 231 pounds, Herrera is a little undersized for the next level. But he plays with great instincts and always has a nose for the football.

The best bet from Herrera is that he makes an NFL roster as a reserve inside linebacker, plays special teams and works his way into the starting lineup. If he can do that, then he has a chance to have a long career in the NFL.

No. 2: ILB Ramik Wilson

4 of 5

Out of all the linebackers who played in the SEC and are entering the NFL draft, Ramik Wilson is the most productive. He led the SEC in tackles in 2013 and was fifth last season. Wilson has the ability to play sideline to sideline, and he rarely gets blown off the ball.

However, NFL scouts may not have not seen enough impact plays from Wilson over the last two years to prove he’s ready to take his game to the next level. If Wilson goes to a team that is aggressive on defense, he’ll have a chance to play right away. But he may start his career as a backup and see a lot of action on special teams.

No. 1: RB Todd Gurley

5 of 5

There were zero running backs drafted in the first round last year. That could change this year because Todd Gurley is the real deal.

The only concern coaches and scouts would have is the ACL injury he suffered back in November. But his rehab work and the fact he’s being evaluated by the medical staff at the NFL combine will determine if he needs more time or not.

Gurley is a rare blend of speed and power. He has great balance and quick feet to go along with it. He also has strong hands, only fumbling three times in 510 carries.

If he can bounce back from the ACL injury, he will have a chance to be a top-five running back in the NFL.
