Daytona Budweiser Duels 2015: Live Results, Standings and Analysis
Hendrick Motorsports dominated the Budweiser Duels at Daytona International Speedway Thursday night, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson earned a victory in their respective races.
Earnhardt Jr. won the first duel after he started the 60-lap race in last place. The driver of the No. 88 car used a terrific move on lap 43 to get past Matt Kenseth and earn the third position on Sunday's starting grid.
Jeff Gordon, who won the pole during Sunday's qualifying session, finished second in Duel 1, while Joey Logano, Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five.
Beyond the top five, a few younger drivers clinched their places in the big race with finishes in the top 15. Landon Cassill, Cole Whitt, Michael McDowell, J.J. Yeley and Ty Dillon all earned their spots in the race Thursday night thanks to their respective finishes in the first duel.
Johnson controlled most of the second duel after he took the lead away from Kyle Busch early in the race. Numerous drivers attempted to take first place away from the No. 48 car, but no one had any success.
Kyle Busch, who finished behind Johnson in the second duel, will start in fourth Sunday because Johnson clinched a spot on the front row in qualifying.
The race ended in a frantic green-white-checkered finish that saw Danica Patrick and David Ragan claw for a spot in Sunday's race.
Both drivers were involved in wrecks earlier in the race, but they survived to finish in 10th and 14th respectively.
Mike Wallace and Justin Allgaier also earned their way into the race by finishing in the top 15 of the second duel.
