As Life Goes On, Sports Give Us Lasting Moments
You could say this is my introduction into sports writing, and I intend to dive in without testing the waters.
I am currently headed into my junior year of college, studying for a business major, yet I can never get it out of my head that a job in sports is what I truly want to pursue. Since I was in the second grade, my intentions were to either play professional sports (who doesn't dream of that glory as a kid), or work with sports in one way or another.
I have recently pursued business as a study because I currently play college golf at a school where that is the only major that seemed "fitting" for me to pursue. However, the urge to work with sports keeps echoing in the back of my mind.
Lately, I have wondered what it is about sports, whether it be professional or amateur, that captivates almost every human in the world, regardless if it is a die hard fan or the occasional viewer. Go to any nook or cranny in the world and I will guarantee some sort of sport is played and "worshipped" by many.
It is the fact that these games take away from the harsh realities that exist in the world. Sports give the population a break from the evils that exist in the world, and it is a well deserved break, at that. Sports can teach many things (participating or viewing), and these lessons can be applied to all walks of life. What else in life can give you a crash course on loyalty, humility, sportsmanship, dedication, and many other qualities in such a short period of time?
It is also the memories that keep every athlete and fan coming back for more.
As I sit here, I can remember sporting events from when I was too young to even go to school. One of my earliest memories is when I attended a Syracuse basketball game. John Wallace dominated inside the paint of the Carrier Dome, and A.I. was running the offense for the much hated rival, the Georgetown Hoyas.
I am currently 20 years of age, born in 1988. I was too young to even remember how old I was at the game, yet I vividly remember becoming upset because with every fast break, all the fans in attendance would stand. Being so young, I could not see over the towering adults that surrounded me. Yet I can still feel the hands of my father lifting me over his shoulders when he noticed I couldn't see, and I still can feel the high fives I gave to the relative strangers around us that supported the same cause we did that day. I can still feel the smile on my face as I saw my first big time athletic event, and no one will ever be able to take that away from me.
I have countless other memories from sporting events I have witnessed over the past twenty years, and I know just about everyone else has a couple, too. Some of my best memories are from sports, and some of my best moments to come are because of sports.
We encounter many problems on each of our walks through this crazy world. Everyone has ups, everyone has downs, and it is the same in the world of sports. Every athlete has ups and every athlete has downs, yet at the end of the day, that glorious moment that could be keeps them coming back time and time again.
For those that watch these events, it is a life lesson each time to see the ups and downs, because when that miraculous moment comes around, it makes everyone realize the glory of life, all because of a game.
