Day 5 Standout Performers
7 of 7
Bowlers Lead the Charge in Canberra
Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza pushed himself onto multiple leaderboards with his three-wicket display during the side's win over Afghanistan. Although the favourites rarely threatened to succumb to an opening-match upset, Mortaza certainly needed to thrust his team-mates over the line with a standout performance.
He posted the sixth-best bowling figures of the tournament with his three in nine overs. In fact, he conceded just 20 runs in this time, the second best economy rate (2.22) behind Afghanistan's Samiullah Shenwari, who conceded two runs in 1.1 overs (1.71).
Afghanistan were certainly more comfortable with the ball in their hands. Other notable performers from Day 5 included Shapoor Zadran and Mirwais Ashraf, who aggressively attacked the Bangladesh order, slotting into the top 10 best economy rates of the tournament so far.
Afghanistan's Batting Woes Provide Worry
Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest scoring player of the day with 71, the 18th best score posted. It's grim reading for Afghanistan, however, whose current leading run scorer is captain Mohammed Nabi with 44. This places him 30th, per ESPN Cricinfo.
While the newcomers possessed plenty of quality and craft when bowling, Afghanistan need the top order to step up. Javed Ahmad, Afsar Zazai and Asghar Stanikazi managed just three between them in their opening attempt, a total which all but ended the side's hopes of victory after a positive morning.
Suffice to say, other teams are likely to be even more ruthless than Bangladesh, who flitted with a lack of focus at times. Although the crowd will root for Afghanistan throughout the tournament, a quick improvement is needed with the bat.
