Manny Pacquiao Wants $5 Million Drug Fine in Potential Floyd Mayweather Fight

Matt FitzgeraldFeb 16, 2015

The long-awaited superfight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. may finally be happening. Until an official announcement is made to confirm, though, news of minute details will continue trickling out.

Such is the case on Monday, as Pacquiao has pushed for a $5 million fine for a positive drug test to be incorporated into the bout's contract. PhilStar.com's Paolo Romero reported the news, along with what Pac-Man had to say about the penalty clause.

"I've no problem with drug testing. In fact, in the contract, I was the one who suggested the $5-million fine if one is tested positive for drugs. I was the one who inserted that because that’s needed," said Pacquiao.

The Telegraph's Gareth A. Davies had reported that an agreement was in place for Pacquiao and Mayweather to square off in the ring for a whopping $250 million.

At Sunday night's NBA All-Star Game in Madison Square Garden, Mayweather said the fight wasn't officially on yet. ESPN captured video of Mayweather's response:

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated weighed in on the perpetual gridlock that's prevented the bout from happening:

As more time passes, the targeted month of May for the fight becomes increasingly difficult to achieve. The longer these boxers wait, the harder their task to train for each other will be.

At least Pacquiao's push for the failed drug test will ensure both fighters are clean if and when they do enter the ring.

It's an intriguing matchup on paper to say the least. Pacquiao's speed and devastating punching combinations would be put to the test against the ultimate technician in Mayweather.

The reported money involved alone should be enough incentive for both sides to work out a finalized deal. Never mind the amazing historical implications the fight would entail, as Pacquiao or Mayweather would bolster their resumes in a big way in boxing's pantheon.
