Did Wemby Shade Chet Holmgren? NBA Fans Sound Off on Spurs Star Hyping KAT in New Trending Video

Adam WellsJun 6, 2026

After Victor Wembanyama praised the defense Karl-Anthony Towns has played on him through the first two games of the NBA Finals, fans are convinced the San Antonio Spurs star's comments were also meant as a dig at his longtime rival Chet Holmgren.

Speaking to reporters after the Spurs' 105-104 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the Finals on Friday (starts at 2:10 mark), Wembanyama explained it's been "very different from previous series" this postseason.

"It's very different from previous series," said Wembanyama. "He's bringing us into difficult areas because they're good players. He's a good player. We need to figure it out. We need to keep working on it. We can do a little bit better. We can do better."

Even though Wembanyama didn't mention Holmgren, that didn't stop fans from speculating it was meant as shade toward the Oklahoma City Thunder center.

Even though Holmgren has insisted there's no animosity between the two, Wembanyama has taken shots at the Thunder star over the years. He said in December there's "no comparison between us."

It's assumed that whatever is going on with Wembanyama and Holmgren dates back to 2021 when they were on opposite sides in the France vs. USA U19 World Cup Final that the American team won.

Whether or not there is an actual feud or not, Wembanyama certainly has bragging rights over Holmgren based on how the Western Conference Finals played out.

Wembanyama averaged 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.7 blocks in the seven-game series. Holmgren was held to 10 points or fewer in four of the seven games, including four on two field-goal attempts in Game 7.

The Knicks used Towns as the primary defender on Wembanyama through the first two games in the NBA Finals. He held the Spurs star to 2-of-11 shooting with five turnovers in Game 1.

One key difference is Towns is listed at 248 pounds, while Holmgren is only 208 pounds with a 7'1" frame. Even though Towns hasn't historically been known for his defensive prowess, he's not as easy to push around because of his size.

It also helps that Towns is playing the best defense of his life in this postseason.

If the Spurs are going to get back in the series, Wembanyama will need to figure out how to take advantage of the Knicks defense like he did frequently in the previous round against Oklahoma City.
