Top 10 Moments from Matchday 2

Danny CoyleFeb 16, 2015

Week 2 of the Six Nations threw up another broad spectrum of rugby's many attributes, as this list shows.

We had stodge and brutalism in Dublin, exhibition stuff at Twickenham and a bit of everything in Edinburgh.

From stunning tries to shuddering hits, here are the best bits from a fun-filled weekend.

Do we really have to take a week off?

10. Atonio’s Deft Hands

1 of 10

It's always nice to see the "big boys" showcase some skills.

France's replacement loosehead Uini Atonio did just that in the buildup to the game's only try in Dublin with a neat basketball dump pass out of the tackle.

9. Cipriani’s Try

2 of 10

Another player welcomed back into the England fold this year made his mark with a try off the bench.

Danny Cipriani started and finished the move after following his pass in support of Jonny May, whose pace and skill saw him beat his man before finding the Sale Shark inside him.

There were no overblown celebrations from the player often accused of having the wrong attitude.

8. Easter’s Try

3 of 10

One for the old boys.

Nick Easter, back from the international wilderness, got back on the England scoresheet when he was driven over the line to become England’s oldest try scorer at the age of 36.

7. Mike Brown’s Reappearance

4 of 10

England full-back Mike Brown suffered a shuddering knockout when his head collided with an Italian player’s back.

There was a long delay while the Harlequin was looked after on the field in line with rugby's focus on head injuries these days.

It was pleasing to see him sitting up and smiling from the bench later in the game.

6. Sexton vs. the Tank

5 of 10

Jonny Sexton's concussion woes began when he collided with Mathieu Bastareaud last year.

A year onand after a 12-week layoff that was the result of too many blows to the head following that first incidentSexton faced the tank from Toulon again.

On 44 minutes, they clashed heads, and both spilled blood. Thankfully, both returned, and from that point on, it seemed the Frenchman was programmed to seek out the Irish fly-half as often as possible.

The Racing Metro man was up to the task.

5. Sean O'Brien Cleans Half of France Out

6 of 10

It has been a long time out of the international picture for Sean O'Brien.

Shoulder reconstruction surgery and a subsequent infection, per the Daily Mail, left him in a race against time to get fit for the 2015 season.

As this massive ruck on Saturday shows, his shoulder looks OK now.

4. Jonathan Joseph's Second Try

7 of 10

This was a peach from the England man who ghosted in off his new position on the right wing to accept a beautifully delayed pass from George Ford after a neat interchange with Billy Twelvetrees.

His pace did the rest.

3. Luca Morisi’s First Try

8 of 10

Luca Morisi looks a real find for Italy.

His first try showed the brains to notice a lock and a prop in front of him and the speed to leave them in his vapour trails.

2. Stuart Hogg’s Try

9 of 10

There is no substitute for pace and no answer to it when Stuart Hogg decides he is going to do you down the outside.

It was a perfect way to take advantage of a great turnover by his fly-half.

1. Jonathan Joseph’s First Try

10 of 10

It took a split second for Joseph to spot a flat-footed, 18st fly-half in front of him and even less time to shimmy around Kelly Haimona and set off for the line.

England fans are not used to seeing their midfield backs do stuff like this.
