Day 3 Standout Performers
7 of 7
Ireland's Team Effort Paying Off
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Ireland's victory was that multiple individuals contributed massively to the downfall of the West Indies.
There's always the possibility of Dwayne Smith, Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo setting an unreachable tally at the top. Once Kevin O'Brien had eliminated Smith, however, George Dockrell stepped up to post some of the tournament's best individual bowling figures so far.
Only four men have taken more than the 22-year-old's three wickets. Dockrell will be looking to improve on his economy rate of 5.00 as the tournament progresses, however.
Dockrell's quality with the ball was backed up by his team-mates at the crease. Paul Stirling's 92 included 12 boundaries and a partnership of 106 with Ed Joyce, whose 84 from 67 balls should also be considered one of the day's notable scorers.
"Ed Joyce looked on a different planet; he was a joy to watch; I would love to have seen him bat to the end; he was that good," said ex-England spinner Graeme Swann, per BBC Sport. "Ireland should be very happy with the way they bowled and batted. They've got work to do with their bowling at the death, but all teams have."
Niall O'Brien hit 44 fours to grab himself 79 from just 87 minutes at the crease, with Ireland enjoying an all-round solid performance. This is sure to provide major confidence heading into the rest of the campaign.
Simmons the Bright Spark for West Indies
No matter what he tried, Lendl Simmons' 102 runs from 84 balls were never going to be enough to halt his team's decline. Granted, he and Darren Sammy worked well to take the West Indies' score from 87/5 to 304/7, but a failing top order and loose bowling ensured Irish victory.
Simmons will at least be pleased to thrust himself up the individual standings. He has the third-highest average of the tournament so far and is a prime candidate for helping the West Indies get back on track. If Smith, Gayle and Bravo are going to remain uninspiring, Simmons is the side's next best bet.
Jerome Taylor also deserves a mention for taking three wickets in 8.5 overs, putting him among the best bowlers on show so far.
