Cricket World Cup 2015: Day 3 Results, Points Tables and Upcoming Schedule

Nick AkermanFeb 15, 2015

Day 3 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw Ireland take on the West Indies in a conclusion to the first round of Pool B fixtures.

Although the West Indies can be considered a much stronger team when on form, the Irish possess an excellent work ethic which has the power to shock at this year's tournament.

The West Indies know that a slow start could test their longevity in the competition. This is a team who have the capacity to fall apart when a collective lack of focus sweeps across their play. Although powerful, the mentality of such a side still needs to be proven.

Ireland Battle Through West Indies Test with Four-Wicket Win

3 of 3

Ireland (307/6) bt. West Indies (304/7) by four wickets

Ireland headed into the 2015 World Cup without a win against the West Indies in one-day international cricket. Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce and captain William Porterfield's side worked excellently on Monday to ensure this snippet of history can be blotted out.

The Europeans steamrollered their way to a four-wicket victory, per Sky Sports:

The Irish faced a sleepy West Indies side, in truth. Ranked eighth in the world heading into this year's tournament, there's always been the sense that, if big hitters such as Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels don't get firing, trouble could ensue.

George Dockrell kept this in mind. He was the first to shred the West Indies' hopes of making a positive start to their campaign. With Dwayne Smith having fallen after putting up just 18—he was eliminated by Kevin O'Brien, with John Mooney taking the catch—Dockrell kicked into gear.

For 22-year-old Dockrell, the 22nd over proved to be pivotal. The West Indies were still reeling from Darren Bravo being run out by Andy McBrine when Dockrell struck. When Gayle was removed after hitting 36, the team sat on 78/3. On the next ball, Samuels fell after receiving an leg-before-wicket call.

Dockrell then removed Denesh Ramdin via the same method, bowling confidently to settle his team. Lendl Simmons looked to be the only man capable of stopping Ireland's momentum, establishing a fierce partnership with Darren Sammy. Both men looked for ways to outfox the Irish, sweeping the ball to the boundary out of sheer will for the most part.

When Sammy fell on 241/6, posting an extremely useful 89 from 67 balls, Simmons kept his nerve to at least ensure the West Indies' score surpassed 300. Andre Russell was able to notch 27 in as many minutes before Mooney bowled Simmons, with none other than Dockrell taking his second successive catch.

The youngster finished with figures of 3-50, with Simmons' 102 the only major blot against the Irish scorecard.

In stepped Stirling with the Irish bat. The West Indies bowled loosely, providing the opportunity for Ireland's Man of the Match to hit nine fours and three sixes on his way to 92 from just 84 balls. Simmons' partnership with Porterfield was at 77 before the latter fell. However, Ed Joyce and Niall O'Brien stepped in to pick up any slack when Stirling finally lost out to Samuels.

Joyce tirelessly added to the Irish score, finding an answer to everything the opposition pitched his way. He almost became too casual as he swatted into the hands of Bravo from Jerome Taylor's ball, but the damage was already done.

His 84, combined with O'Brien's unbeaten 79, meant there was little work for Mooney to do once Andrew Balbirnie, Gary Wilson and Kevin O'Brien were dismissed for a combined total of 10, the last falling on a total of 291. The best of Mooney's cameo was highlighted by Sky Sports:

Mooney comfortably racked up the winning runs, with Ireland taking the victory in 45.5 overs.
