Arsenal Transfer News: Patrick Olsen Rumours Emerge, Joel Campbell Talks Future

Gianni VerschuerenFeb 12, 2015

Arsenal are following Patrick Olsen's trial with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem with great interest and are ready to sign the former Inter Milan midfielder, according to the Daily Express' Ben Jefferson.

Olsen trained with the Dutch squad on Tuesday, and according to De Gelderlander's Pim Roelofs, the Dane made a strong impression:

As a free agent, Olsen could sign a deal with a new club outside of the designated transfer windows and start training straight away.

Olsen impressed as a youth player growing up in Denmark but never truly convinced in Italy, and his inability to crack Stromsgodset's starting XI while on loan last season likely contributed to Inter's decision not to play the midfielder more frequently.

His talent is undeniable—he didn't make UEFA's list of the top talents at the U17 European Championships for no reason—but at this stage of his career, one has to wonder whether he'll ever blossom into a truly top player.

A contract with Vitesse seems like a perfect scenario for Olsen, who needs consistent minutes to show top clubs around Europe he's still worth taking a flyer on.

Joel Campbell spoke to Arsenal Player about his loan experiences and his vision for the future, expressing hope he could still play a big part for the Gunners at some point down the road. Per Arsenal.com's Max Jones, he said:

"

My experiences abroad helped me a lot. At Lorient I had my first spell in European football. I arrived in France aged 18 and I managed to play many games in the league.

[...]

So far I’ve enjoyed this journey. I’m just 22 years old but I’ve played in France, Spain, Greece and England. I still have a long way to go but I hope not to get any serious injuries so I can work hard and just continue to improve.

"

The Costa Rica international was one of the breakout stars at the 2014 World Cup, and coming off an excellent season on loan with Olympiacos, fans were hoping he could finally have a major impact for Arsenal.

The 22-year-old hardly played during the first half of the 2014-15 campaign, however, and he moved to Spanish side Villarreal on loan as part of the deal for Gabriel Paulista.

The Yellow Submarine wasted no time adding the young forward to their European squad, a sign he could be in line for a big role in Spain, per Inside La Liga:

Campbell was fantastic for Olympiacos last year, and another strong loan spell with Villarreal could force manager Arsene Wenger into revisiting his plans for the Costa Rican's future.

If he continues to shine for other clubs, he's bound to get a chance to play consistent minutes for Arsenal at some point in the future. Even if he doesn't, his transfer value will only increase.

Campbell still isn't running his mouth or throwing Wenger under the bus, unlike Lukas Podolski, per The Sun (via ESPN FC), so as of now, fans can still hope they haven't seen the last of the speedster in a Gunners jersey.
