Most Dramatic Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerFeb 13, 2015

In our first week of post-football life, there was actually quite a bit of action and drama that took the sting away just a little bit.

The NHL and the NBA are churning out great games night after night, and college basketball is heating up as we get closer to March Madness.

Here are the most dramatic moments in sports from the past week.

Davis Hits Game-Winning 3

1 of 8

We're reaching back a little bit here, but last Friday night technically counts for this past week, and we would be remiss not to include such an incredible game on this list.

The New Orleans Pelicans and the Oklahoma City Thunder are two of the Western Conference's most dynamic teams, and they did not disappoint.

The two teams battled back and forth for the entire game, and it culminated in a wild final 10 seconds of play. A missed shot, a turnover and then another missed shot led to Anthony Davis sinking two free throws with 2.8 seconds on the clock to put the Pelicans up by three.

But then, Russell Westbrook was fouled as he missed a three-pointer, and he made all three to tie up the score. Then Davis, of all people, took the inbounds pass with 1.2 seconds on the clock and silenced the OKC crowd with an insane double-clutch three-pointer at the buzzer.

Predators Beat Lightning in OT

2 of 8

The Nashville Predators and the Tampa Bay Lightning are two of the most exciting teams in the NHL this season, and they put on quite a show Tuesday night.

Nashville went ahead with two second-period goals, but Tampa Bay responded promptly early in the third period with two goals of its own to tie the score.

But then, with 33 seconds left in overtime, winger James Neal stormed into the offensive zone and fired a shot five-hole that sealed the dramatic win for the Predators.

Kentucky Survives Again

3 of 8

At this point in the season, it's easy to tell that every team is just gunning to bring down the Kentucky Wildcats.

The LSU Tigers played arguably their best game of the season Tuesday night against the Wildcats, going on an amazing 21-2 run toward the end of the second half that gave them a six-point lead.

But Kentucky held strong, and it went on a furious late-game comeback that included a beautiful go-ahead hook shot from Karl-Anthony Towns with one minute, 30 seconds left. Kentucky would hold on to that lead and escape with a 71-69 win.

Little League Strips Chicago of Title

4 of 8

After some speculation earlier in the day about this happening, Little League Baseball officially announced late Tuesday that it would be stripping the Chicago-based Jackie Robinson West team of its U.S. championship title, per Tom Farrey and Joe McDonald of ESPN.

Its coach, Darold Butler, was also suspended, as the organization found them guilty of using players outside of the team's specified geographic area.

Mountain Ridge Little League (Las Vegas, Nevada) will now be awarded the U.S. title.

LeBron-Love Twitter Beef

5 of 8

This season certainly has not gone exactly how the Cleveland Cavaliers planned, when they added forwards LeBron James and Kevin Love this offseason.

Love has been particularly disappointing, and there have been numerous stories throughout the year of tension and discontent behind the scenes in Cleveland.

James sent out a rather ominous tweet February 7, and it seemed to many that the tweet was directed at Love's attempts (or lack thereof) to fit in with the rest of the Cavs.

After originally denying that it was directed at Love, James later admitted that it was indeed intended for his teammate. Barry Petchesky of Deadspin has the whole breakdown here, and it's definitely a weird situation that is worth checking out.

Stars-Rangers OT Thriller

6 of 8

The first 57 minutes or so of Sunday's game between the Dallas Stars and the New York Rangers was just an ordinary (albeit intense) game.

But in the last couple of minutes, things got crazy when Dallas defenseman John Klingberg took a brutal delay-of-game penalty, and Rangers winger Chris Kreider banged home the tying goal with a mere 1:20 left in the game.

Dallas, however, seemed revitalized in overtime and came out with a bang. After a number of chances, winger Ales Hemsky fired a sweet shot top shelf, just over goaltender Cam Talbot's shoulder, to give the Stars a win.

Spurs Win for Pop's 1,000th

7 of 8

Gregg Popovich is one of the greatest all-time coaches in any sport, and he reached a major milestone in dramatic fashion Monday night.

His San Antonio Spurs were pitted against the pesky but underachieving Indiana Pacers, and they certainly had their hands full.

Indiana went into the fourth quarter with a commanding 14-point lead after a huge third quarter, but Tim Duncan and the Spurs chipped away slowly as the Pacers unraveled.

Finally, with the clock winding down, Spurs guard Marco Belinelli found himself with an open jump shot and sunk it to give Popovich his 1,000th win with a mere 2.1 seconds on the clock.

Turner Wins It with 0.2 Seconds Left

8 of 8

The Atlanta Hawks have been one of the best teams in the NBA this season, but no game at the TD Garden in Boston is easy.

With a raucous crowd behind them, the Celtics kept pace with the Hawks and erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit with some big shots and stellar defense.

The Celtics found themselves down by one with just a few seconds left on the clock when Evan Turner took the ball and made a beautiful scoop shot that went in with a mere 0.2 seconds on the clock to send the crowd into a frenzy, giving Boston one of its best wins of the year so far.
