Eastern Conference Player to Watch: LeBron James, SF, Cleveland

One of the most popular players in the NBA is Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, and basketball fans must keep an eye on what he has up his sleeve for the All-Star Game.

What makes James different is that he takes the All-Star Game seriously and is typically one of the biggest stars in the battle between the East and the West. Unlike years past, though, this year’s Eastern Conference roster could be very awkward.

James congratulated his teammate Kyrie Irving on making the All-Star team:

While James may have Irving on his team, he will also be sharing a bench with former Miami Heat teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The three men have not played on the same team since James left via free agency, but they will be forced to coexist this weekend.

In 10 career All-Star Games, James has averaged 24.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals, per NBA.com, and he won the MVP award for the game in 2006 and 2008. In his 11th attempt, James will once again look to steal the show.

Western Conference Player to Watch: Damian Lillard, PG, Portland

There were several injuries leading into the All-Star Game, and one of the players who will miss the action is Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers. To fill out the roster, the NBA named Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard as his replacement.

Lillard was originally excluded from the All-Star Game, and he voiced his displeasure with the decision. While he still believes he should have made it outright, Lillard finally gets his chance to prove everyone wrong.

When asked about finally making the All-Star team, Lillard told Joe Freeman of The Oregonian, “I'm thankful. It's funny ... what's meant to be will be.”

In the 52 games he has played in his third NBA season, Lillard has averaged 21.6 points, 6.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. With the Trail Blazers ranked first in the Northwest Division, there is little doubt Lillard should have made the All-Star team originally.

Unfortunately, the backcourt for the Western Conference is stacked with talented players, and it is unclear how much playing time Lillard will get. With a chip on his shoulder, the Portland star will be on fire once he hits the floor.
