Farmers Insurance Open 2015: Day 2 Leaderboard Results and Twitter Reaction
Harris English surged to the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open, thanks to a six-under round of 66 on Torrey Pines' north course. He faces plenty of competition, however, as 14 players are within four strokes of his 10-under lead.
Most of the focus after Day 1 was on Tiger Woods' continued struggles. His game was erratic once again before he was forced to withdraw due to injury. His presence always gives a tournament a boost, but a closely contested weekend battle should provide the entertainment value this week.
Let's check out how the leaders stack up following Round 2:
English put together an impressive blemish-free round with six birdies, three on each side, and no bogeys. At the very least, he's put himself in position to score his first victory on the PGA Tour since 2013. Holding on won't be easy with so many other contenders, though.
Jason Sobel of Golf Channel notes the American is almost a wily veteran given the number of young players making an impact these days:
Nick Watney also moved himself into prime position with a seven-under effort on Friday. Like English, he was able to navigate the north course without dropping a single shot in the second round. He knocked in four birdies on the back half, including one on the 18th to finish on a high note.
Jhonattan Vegas and Martin Laird both join Watney at eight-under par, two strokes off the pace.
Nicholas Thompson checks in one shot behind that trio followed by a massive group at six-under, which includes Jason Day, Ian Poulter and Jimmy Walker.
Day was actually one stroke over par after a rough go on the south course in the first round. The north course treated him far better as he poured in eight birdies. PGA of Australia pointed out it allowed him to jump nearly 90 spots:
Kelly Tilghman of Golf Channel sees the current leaderboard in a unique way:

Not everybody was having as much fun out there during the first two days as those guys, though.
Phil Mickelson couldn't rebound from a poor opening round and missed the cut. It's the second straight event that this has happened after his run at the Waste Management Phoenix Open ended early last week. Justin Ray of Golf Channel noted it would be the first time that's occurred in more than a decade:
The PGA Tour passed along comments from the fan favorite about his putting woes:
Dustin Johnson also joined Mickelson on the early-exit list. It was his first tournament after stepping away for six months to deal with personal issues. There were some promising flashes, but he'll need to play more consistently to start contending again.
Doug Ferguson of The Associated Press pointed out it was also his second straight missed cut, albeit in completely different fashion than his fellow American:
As for the shot of the day, it likely belonged to Hideki Matsuyama, as highlighted by the PGA Tour:
It wasn't quite enough as he fell a stroke shy of the cut line.
Looking ahead to the weekend, there's a good chance some leaderboard chaos will ensue. There are so many players bunched close together and, even with English as the player to beat, thanks to a two-shot lead, no overwhelming favorite has emerged.
That's a good thing for the tournament. Having Woods or Mickelson in the mix is always preferred from a television viewer's standpoint. But with them out, the best thing that can happen is having a large group of players with a chance to win heading into the final day.
Barring a terrific Saturday from English, it appears that's exactly what's going to happen.
