INSIDE EVERTON WEEK: 10 Most Memorable Everton Derby Wins Against Liverpool

Jerrad PetersFeb 6, 2015

The Merseyside derby hasn't exactly provided the best viewing for Everton fans of late, what with their last victory in the fixture coming back in 2010.

But there was a time—and not all that long ago—when the Toffees more than held their own against Liverpool, winning at home and away and in some of the most high-pressure circumstances imaginable.

To mark Inside Everton Week at Bleacher Report we thought we'd look back at 10 of the club's most memorable triumphs over their local rivals.

Let's get to it.

10. 1978: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

1 of 10

When Everton hosted Liverpool in October 1978, the Reds were reigning European champions and would go on to win a third First Division title in four seasons the following spring. So Everton's 1-0 victory at Goodison Park was one to celebrate—as was Andy King's exceptional, 20-yard shot that found the back of the net.

9. 1997: Everton 2-0 Liverpool

2 of 10

Between November 1994 and April 1999, Everton didn't lose a single match to Liverpool. In October 1997, Neil Ruddock accidentally opened the scoring for the hosts at Goodison Park with an own-goal just before the half-time whistle, and with 15 minutes remaining, Danny Cadamarteri sealed the three points for the Toffees.

8. 2009: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

Everton's 1-0 win over Liverpool in the 2008-09 FA Cup campaign is memorable because few people can actually remember the winning goal. Dan Gosling scored it in the 118th minute at Goodison Park, but broadcasters ITV had cut away for a commercial and television viewers were limited to seeing it by replay.

It took just four minutes for Kevin Campbell to open the scoring for Everton at Anfield in September 1999. From there, referee Mike Riley had his hands full as each of Francis Jeffers, Sander Westerveld and Steven Gerrard were given their marching orders.

6. 1986: Liverpool 0-2 Everton

5 of 10

Everton had won their first title in 15 years in 1985 and would regain it in 1987. But Liverpool wound up champions in 1986, although they lost a home match to the Toffees that February. Gary Lineker and Kevin Ratcliffe did the goalscoring for the guests.

5. 2006: Everton 3-0 Liverpool

Everton's biggest win over Liverpool in 42 years came on September 9, 2006, when they won 3-0 at Goodison Park. Tim Cahill and Andy Johnson scored within 12 minutes of each other in the first half, and while the Reds started the second half well, they couldn't find the back of the net, and Johnson completed his brace—and secured the victory—in the final minute of play.

4. 1964: Liverpool 0-4 Everton

In September 1964, Everton earned their biggest post-war win away to Liverpool when they shocked the home crowd to the tune of 4-0. Colin Harvey, John Morrissey, Fred Pickering and Derek Temple were the goalscorers that day.

3. 1970: Liverpool 0-2 Everton

8 of 10

In 1970, Everton won their seventh top-flight title, and on March 21 of that year ended a three-match winless skid against Liverpool. Joe Royle and Alan Whittle scored the goals at Anfield as the Toffees went on to finish nine points clear of Leeds United atop the table. The Reds came fifth that season—15 points behind the champions.

2. 1995: Liverpool 1-2 Everton

9 of 10

As far as individual derby wins go, it doesn't get much more memorable than Everton's 2-1 win at Anfield in November 1995. Andrei Kanchelskis broke a scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute and found the back of the net a second time in the 68th. Liverpool, however, came on at the end and pulled a goal back with a minute remaining through Robbie Fowler. But it was too little, too late.

1. 1984: Liverpool 0-1 Everton

10 of 10

Graeme Sharp's incredible, long-distance volley in October 1984 is Merseyside derby lore. It was the only goal of the match at Anfield and it set up what was to be a memorable season at Everton. They won an eighth title the following spring—finishing an eye-popping 13 points above a Liverpool side that included the likes of Alan Hansen, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish.
