Sports Illustrated reported Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will pay $350 million for renovations to Sun Life Stadium that are expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2016 season. There's a pretty specific reason for the hefty renovation plans, per Forward Florida:
The Dolphins will be paid incentives from Miami-Dade County every time they host major events, per Craig Davis of the Sun Sentinel, so Ross and company clearly want to make Sun Life Stadium a top-notch venue.
In January, the team's president and CEO, Tom Garfinkel, tweeted out images of what the new stadium and seats will look like once renovations are complete:
Meanwhile, 560 WQAM provided an image of the model for the new look:
And Andrew Abramson of The Palm Beach Post previewed some of the nicer seats being added:
But the most intriguing new change is an assortment of living-room-style areas for fans who want the at-home experience inside of the stadium. Darren Rovell of ESPN.com has more on the interesting plan:
"The Miami Dolphins are knocking out seats on the 30-yard lines in the lower bowl of the south side of Sun Life Stadium as part of their $400 million renovation and adding 32 'living rooms.' The areas are sold in groups of four, and each includes a 30-inch wide recliner with options for an 18-inch TV screen in front of each seat, a 32-inch TV for every two seats ($15,000 more) or a 32-inch TV in front of each chair ($30,000 more).
The standard cost for the package of four seats is $75,000 and includes food and drinks and access to a lounge area.
"
Rovell also tweeted models of what the new areas will look like:
The Dolphins are pushing hard to dramatically improve the stadium experience, and they have the support of the county behind them. It's hardly a surprise—hosting the Super Bowl is essentially two weeks of tourism and a boon for local businesses.
With new stadiums popping up all over the place and non-traditional sites like New York hosting Super Bowls, competition for the big game has never been higher.
With these new renovations, the Dolphins will be hoping Sun Life Stadium can stay in a frequent hosting rotation for years to come.
