The final group matches of the South American Youth Championship take place in Montevideo on Saturday, with Argentina in control of the destiny of the title.

Six teams remain in the final group stage of the under-20 competition, with the winners automatically joining Brazil in the 2016 Olympic Games.

But despite Argentina's dominance, Uruguay can pip them at the post, and leapfrog their rivals into the top spot on the final day.

Match Preview

Argentina under-20's have been the standout group of players at the South American Championships, suffering just one defeat in eight matches through the whole competition, per Soccerway.com.

The Uruguay side have kept up with their continental compatriots through most of the journey to the final contest but an extra draw in the last round has seen them trail by two points.

And it was largely thought roles would be reversed at this stage with Argentina perceived to have the weaker defence.

Tim Vickery of ESPNFC recently rated the chances of both teams before the final group kicked off, and he proclaimed Argentina would not have enough in the tank to get to this position:

"

How will Argentina fare against them [Uruguay, Brazil and Colombia]? Will they be able to play their way through? And how will Argentina's defence stand up? It has looked suspect so far.

Will coach Humberto Grondona be tempted to rejig the balance of his attacking lineup to make allowances for the better standard of opposition?

"

Grondona's team have answered those questions emphatically, conceding just once in the final group, and scoring eight times, per Soccerway.

It is a phenomenal record for a team who were fancied to finish behind the three powers Vickery highlighted and now their destiny is firmly in their own hands.

Having beaten Brazil 2-0, and forcing a draw from the tipped Colombians, Argentina will feel they can earn the draw against the hosts that will seal the title.

Brazil have mathematically given themselves too much to do to reign supreme but they could still pass Argentina or Uruguay into second spot.

But the Uruguayans will feel their dogged midfield of Nahitan Nandez and Mauro Arambarri can halt the visitors and help grab them the result they desperately need.

Vickery spoke about both players in his article and lauded the overall impact of Uruguay's central core:

"

Uruguay have looked impressive. They are a team with a strong identity and a clear idea of what they are trying to do. The central midfield duo of Nahitan Nandez and Mauro Arambarri may not catch the eye with elaborate midfield triangles, but that is not their aim.

They press well, mark tight and move the ball quickly, with Arambarri a threat with his powerful late bursts into the opposing area.

"

Nandez and Arambarri harp back to classical Uruguayan players with a tough dexterity and a unique aggression. The country's standing in South America has always been below the lofty status of Brazil and Argentina, creating a fighting spirit embodied by their under-20 side.

However, the group leaders carry the threat of a prodigious striker who is already plying his trade successfully in La Liga with Villarreal—Luciano Vietto.

The youngster is his country's prime weapon and in 20 La Liga games this term, he has returned an impressive 10 goals, per WhoScored.com.

It is difficult to predict which side will pull through in this crucial game but Argentina seem to have the slim advantage.

They have shut their opponents down with strong authority in the past few weeks and Uruguay will have to be in top gear to hurt them.

But the home team will have the crowd on their side for a match which is effectively a final, and that advantage may see Uruguay win the competition at the final hurdle, breaking young Argentine hearts.
