The First Place Montreal Expos: 15 years later

JoeSportsFanAug 12, 2009

On this day 15 years ago, Major League Baseball shut its doors for good on the 1994 season, taking away the postseason and World Series for the first time ever. It would figure that at a time when the Expos were 34 games over .500, their efforts would be for naught. The Expos were loaded with talent and reading the ‘94 club’s Baseball-Reference page is quite telling.

Every one in their starting lineup was under the age of 30 and only Jeff Fassero (31) was above the age of 28 in the Expos starting rotation. And the bullpen? Every pitcher was under 30, with Gil Heredia being the oldest at 28 years old.

The starting pitchers W-L record was 50-22. Pedro Martinez was just 22 years old, having come from the Dodgers in exchange for DeLino DeShields. The starting lineup featured Moises Alou (.337) and Larry Walker (.322) and Marquis Grissom (.288), who stole 36 bases.

Where am I going with all this? Nowhere. But if you’re bored and looking to increase your baseball nostalgia level, check out the ‘94 Expos in all their glory on Baseball Reference dot com. It’s the closest thing the team has to a championship shrine.

Greedy bastard baseball.
