Patriots vs. Seahawks: Final Score, Stats List and Reaction for Super Bowl 2015

R. Cory SmithFeb 3, 2015

After over a decade of waiting, the New England Patriots finally have their fourth Super Bowl title. A late drive by Tom Brady followed by a questionable call from Pete Carroll left the Patriots hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The Patriots trailed by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. However, they had Brady, one of the most clutch postseason quarterbacks in NFL history, on their side. Tom Terrific tossed four touchdowns in the game, but none was bigger than his pass to Julian Edelman to take the 28-24 lead.

That's where the score would stay, as Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson on the goal line to close the game. Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald notes where the win puts Brady compared to entire franchises:

Brady wasn't the only star Sunday night. Each of his four touchdown passes went to a different target, with Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell reaching the end zone as well. Those four touchdowns helped him pass Joe Montana for first in touchdowns in the Super Bowl with 13 in his career.

Here's a look at the overall statistics for the top players in the Super Bowl:

The importance of Brady on Sunday night can't be overstated. His four touchdowns were fitting, as he captured his fourth ring thanks to those passes.

David Leonhardt of The New York Times points out how successful Brady has been during his career:

What really won the game for New England was Brady's ridiculous play in the fourth quarter. After watching his last two Super Bowls end with Eli Manning leading huge drives, Brady created some magic of his own.

NFL on ESPN and ESPN Stats & Info note how great his statistics were in the final quarter:

The other play that decided the outcome was Butler's huge interception. Jermaine Kearse caught a miraculous pass to get the Seahawks down the field, and Marshawn Lynch got the ball to the 1-yard line.

Rather than rush the ball with Lynch again on 2nd-and-goal, Carroll decided to put the ball in Wilson's hands. After not throwing an interception all game, Wilson missed his receiver, and Butler finished the game for the Patriots.

Carroll took the blame for the baffling play call, per the NFL's official Twitter account:

While many analysts and players around league, including some from Seattle, criticized Carroll, others looked at the full picture. Dan Graziano of ESPN offered his take on where the Seahawks stand following the Super Bowl:

Regardless of whether the final play call was right, both franchises come away looking like contenders for next season.

Brady is aging, but the core of LaFell, Edelman and Gronk can carry the load. The Pats defense is also one of the most formidable in the league, with young stars such as Jamie Collins and Butler.

Meanwhile, Wilson made it to the Super Bowl twice in his first three seasons. He might have thrown the late interception, but he has a defense that can get Seattle back to the Super Bowl. If the Seahawks add better receivers and grow offensively, these two teams might have another date in February next year.
