Super Bowl XLIX Props: Coin Toss, Gatorade and National Anthem Bets

OddsShark.comJan 26, 2015

Heads should be favored over tails, orange should be a bigger favorite as color of choice for the postgame Gatorade shower, and odds should favor the under in the national anthem prop.

That is, assuming recent history repeats itself when Super Bowl prop bets start being graded Sunday at Super Bowl XLIX. Fans can bet on everything from the coin toss that starts the game to whom the Super Bowl MVP will thank first in his acceptance speech at the end of the game.

And almost everything in between.

The first bet to be decided Super Bowl Sunday revolves around the singing of the national anthem, which this year will be performed by Broadway star Idina Menzel. The sportsbooks are listing an over/under of two minutes, one second for Menzel's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a 4-1 payout if she forgets or omits at least one word.

Last year, opera star Renee Fleming cranked out the anthem in 1:54, playing well under the betting total of 2:20. The average time of the last nine national anthems comes out at 1:56. Under bettors have cashed six of the past eight big games.

Next up comes the ultimate in 50-50 betting: the Super Bowl coin toss. Or is it truly a 50-50 deal. The Super Bowl coin toss has split perfectly between heads and tails through the first 48 Super Bowls, coming up 24 times each; however, six of the last eight tosses have come up heads.

Don’t try telling that to AFC teams who have won the coin toss just twice in the past 17 games.

Winning the toss apparently doesn't provide much of an advantage, considering the teams that have called it right are just 24-24 straight up (SU) through 48 Super Bowls. That hasn't been true lately, as the teams that have won the toss are 5-2 SU and 6-1 against the spread over the last seven Super Bowls.

Sportsbooks are listing the coin toss as a pickem.

Finally, the event that signifies that the game has been decided is the Gatorade shower. It's become tradition since the days of Bill Parcells' New York Giants for winning players to douse their head coach with an icy cooler full of sports drink.

Orange, which has been used for the dunk three times in the last five Super Bowls, is the favorite at odds of 3-2. Yellow, which hasn't been used since the Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII, is the second choice at 5-2.

Clear/water, which hasn't been used since the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, is the third choice at 3-1. Blue and red, which haven't been used in any of the last 14 Super Bowls, are both offered at 15-2. Green is last on that prop list at 10/1.

New England head coach Bill Belichick avoided the dunking following victories in Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII but got a clear shower after Super Bowl XXXIX. Last year, Seattle dunked head coach Pete Carroll in orange, which paid off at 3-1 odds.

There are literally hundreds of props available at Vegas and online sportsbooks, many focused on player stats and team outcomes (such as "will there be a safety or special teams TD scored").
