WWE Royal Rumble 2015: Biggest Unanswered Questions Going into Event

Alfred KonuwaJan 25, 2015

Who's the favorite to win the Royal Rumble? What kind of plot twists are in store? Who will walk out with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship?

These are just some of the many questions in the hours leading up to WWE's prestigious pay-per-view.

From the Royal Rumble match itself to the heavyweight championship main event, nothing is certain. By show's end, the projected WrestleMania main event could be a combination of matches.

Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns? Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns? Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar? Could John Cena get in on all this?

Unanswered questions are caused by effective storyline development that leaves fans wondering how angles will pay off. Some questions arrive from themes and mini-traditions in the Royal Rumble match.

Certain angles have been executed better than others, but all questions should be answered by the time Royal Rumble signs off.

5. Will The Ascension Get Its Momentum Back?

1 of 5

The Ascension saw its first true test of competition on Raw, and it wasn't pretty. Outnumbered by WWE legends, The upstart tag team was quickly mauled by The Attitude Era.

Now, the intriguing duo will take on The New Age Outlaws. It's likely The Ascension gets the win to continue its unbeaten streak on the main roster.

Following a series of wins over enhancement talent, such a quick disposal on Raw hurt The Ascension's already questionable credibility. But much like defeating a team from yesteryear, it's all part of an intentionally stale gimmick.

4. What Will Kofi Kingston Think Of Next?

2 of 5

Year after year, Kofi Kingston dazzles in Battle Royals, using every prop in his wake to extend his stay. His highlight reel can be described similarly to that of Michael Jordan.

Jordan had "The Shrug," "The Dunk" and "The Shot." Kingston has "The Handstand," "The Guardrail" and "The Chair."

Okay, not quite Jordan, but close.

Kingston seems to find a way to outdo himself every year. Assuming he's in the Royal Rumble, fans will anticipate a flashy elimination-saving stunt prior to his exit. Perhaps this one will involve the assistance of a New Day member or two.

3. Which Surprise Entrances Does WWE Have in Store?

3 of 5

Spoiler Alert: The following contains possible Royal Rumble spoilers.

No Royal Rumble is complete without a surprise or seven. Given the weak pool of talent in this year's Rumble, there's a bit more pressure for WWE to deliver in that department.

A raucous Philadelphia crowd will have nostalgia for old ECW stars. Backstage talk of legends like Diamond Dallas Page and The Dudley Boyz, per PWInsider (h/t WrestlingInc.com), seems to indicate that WWE is on the right track.

In addition to legends, surprises also come in the form of returning current stars.

Randy Orton has been out for multiple months now, and it would be surprising if he did not show up. Bo Dallas is expected to return to competition at tonight's pay-per-view as well.

With so much transitional talent and several return possibilities, there may be as many surprise entrants as announced WWE Superstars.

2. Just How Many Matches Will Seth Rollins Work?

4 of 5

There is a very real possibility that Seth Rollins will work three matches in one night.

He is already advertised to compete in a Triple Threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. With the Money in the Bank briefcase in tow, he could end up attempting to cash in on that same night. If he's unsuccessful in both areas, there's a good chance he'll pop up in the Royal Rumble.

As Adam Copeland will attest, there's a lot of exposure that comes with an opportunist gimmick.

Rollins' night will end with an accumulation of success and/or failure. He could walk out a Money in the Bank holder, a Royal Rumble winner, a world heavyweight champion or a loser.

1. Will WWE Cave into the Yes Movement Again?

5 of 5

As far back as July, it was rumored that Roman Reigns would face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc.com).

It's no secret WWE is grooming the second-generation powerhouse as its next top star.

With Daniel Bryan back in the picture, however, WWE is facing a familiar conundrum. In a hostile environment, with The Yes Movement undeterred, will Bryan change WrestleMania plans yet again?

It's anybody's guess as to how this will turn out. There are pros and cons with both men going to WrestleMania.

WrestleMania could feasibly be Reigns' second pay-per-view match. But can WWE really trust Bryan after he suffered such a serious injury last time around?

This burning question will dominate the biggest match on the card. How WWE answers it will make or break the buildup to the WrestleMania 31 main event.
