Breaking News: Linas Kleiza to Leave Nuggets and NBA for Greece
After making few moves this offseason, the Denver Nuggets are now forced to make a move, or two, as Linas Kleiza says goodbye to the Mile High City and hello to the Aegean Sea.
As reported by ESPN, Denver Nuggets SF Linas Klieza will take a two-year deal worth $12.2 million to play for the Olympiakos of Greece.
This comes as a huge surprise because there was some interest for his services in the NBA, including from the Nuggets, but they were only offering $2.7 million per year.
This deal with the Olympiakos makes him $6.1 million per year, a little more than the veteran minimum in the NBA today.
For the Nuggets, this is huge because Mark Warkentien and Rex Chapman seemed content standing pat with mostly the same team as last year. But now Denver has to find a backup SF, and it's late in the offseason.
At this point, the best case scenario would be to find a three-four type player. Someone who is athletic and can shoot, but also has size. This could be a difficult find this late in the offseason.
But on the flip side, this does open up some cap room for the Nuggets, who would have had to pay him $2.7 million per year. And with money left over from the Camby deal, Denver could find someone with a modest salary to come play for them.
But lets face it, even with Kleiza there, they still needed another big man. Now, they need a few. Also, Denver retain's Klieza's rights, so if he wants back into the league, he will have to go through the Nuggets.
Hopefully the front office will move fast as the season is approaching.
Little over two and a half months remain until the beginning of the NBA season, and the Nuggets push to another chance at a championship. To step one round closer into the NBA Finals, they will need to do just more than keep their team as currently constructed.
