Patriots vs. Seahawks: Fantasy Favorites, Lineup Picks for Super Bowl 2015

Steven CookJan 22, 2015

Super Bowl XLIX is a chance for the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks to further cement their respective legacies, but it's also the final opportunity to play fantasy football until the 2015 season.

Individual statistics can be so impossibly tough to predict in a game with as much magnitude as the Super Bowl, but that won't stop fans from filling out fantasy lineups in the hopes of winning some cash before the long offseason. The simple end result will be all that matters for Patriots and Seahawks players, but as always, who catches and runs for what will indeed matter elsewhere.

With so much firepower and unpredictability on both of these offenses, there's no telling who will get the ball with every snap and help to decide the championship. But let's take a stab at which player at each position will have the best individual performance below.

Super Bowl XLIX: Ideal Fantasy Lineup

QBTom Brady, NE27-40, 290 passing yards, 2 TD, INT
RB1Marshawn Lynch, SEA21 carries, 108 yards, TD
RB2LeGarrette Blount, NE17 carries, 78 yards, TD
WR1Julian Edelman, NE8 catches, 63 rec. yards, TD
WR2Doug Baldwin, SEA5 catches, 75 yards
TERob Gronkowski, NE7 catches, 80 yards, TD
DefensePatriots23 points allowed, 2 takeaways

Nobody does the postseason like Tom Brady.

Everybody knows about his three Super Bowl titles and consistent playoff acumen, but Brady has been big once again in this year's run to the final game. He has thrown for three touchdowns in each of the Patriots' two AFC playoff games, and he even ran for a score—good for seven touchdowns in two games.

Brady has been easy money in the playoffs throughout his career, but can the same be said heading into a matchup against a star-studded and suffocating Seahawks defense?

It's hard to say, especially given the recent form of the Legion of Boom secondary. Star cornerback Richard Sherman has an interception in both games this postseason, and Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas have been keeping the deep balls in front of them.

With that said, Brady brings a playoff pedigree into this matchup that will inevitably pay dividends, as ESPN Stats & Info noted:

Brady won't be able to get it done without impact playmakers on the outside, however. That's where Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski come into play.

While Edelman showed off his impressive arm against the Ravens, he's much better serving as Brady's most reliable option, using his speed to wiggle open in short-passing situations. With the Seahawks defense pinning their ears back, an option like Edelman will be used early and often by Brady.

Edelman has been there all year long, while Gronkowski has been limited in his impact. But Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus noted Gronk has been getting the ball more, and his mismatch in the middle of the field will cause headaches for Seattle's secondary:

The Patriots won't be the only ones to move the ball, though, they will just be the only ones able to get much done through the air. But Marshawn Lynch might be able to do enough on his own to make up for it.

Russell Wilson struggled mightily his last time out, throwing four interceptions. Against a Patriots secondary that is leaps and bounds ahead of Green Bay's, passing lanes won't be there on Sunday.

But Lynch's impact is sure to be felt, as Seattle turns to him with Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner locking down the outside of the field. He won't carve up the Patriots, but he will do enough to move drives along and get into the end zone once for Seattle.
