Pro Bowl 2015 Roster: Analyzing Full Fantasy Draft Results for All-Star Clash

Andrew GouldJan 22, 2015

The rosters are all set for Sunday's NFL Pro Bowl after the second day of drafting was completed.

In an attempt to get noticed, the Pro Bowl borrowed a fantasy draft format previously used by the NHL. Rather than dividing the teams by conference, Hall of Fame wide receivers Michael Irvin and Cris Carter captained respective sides, personally selecting their All-Stars.

Irvin expressed his gratitude to bond with the league's next iteration of stars, per Fox Sports Arizona's Kevin Zimmerman

All of us up here, we love the game, and we love what the league has given us an opportunity to do with our lives and how it's helped us change the landscape of our lives. To have the opportunity to be around these current guys...hopefully (it's) an opportunity to impart whatever wisdom we've learned over the years.

On Tuesday, he displayed some homerism in picking Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray to lead his club alongside cornerback Joe Haden. Carter happily settled for the NFL's leading pass-catcher, Antonio Brown, to form a dynamic captain duo with MVP candidate J.J. Watt.

The two picked guards, centers, defensive tackles, fullbacks and special teamers during the first day, leaving most of the fun for Wednesday night's televised event. Let's take a look at how each side made out.

Day 2 Results

Anyone who doesn't taken the game seriously has all the ammo necessary given Andy Dalton's second inclusion. Bleacher Report's Michael Schottey mocked a passer with 7.06 yards per attempt getting the call.

He's not the only questionable quarterback replacement. Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith poked holes into two improbable Pro Bowlers.

Only two original honorees—Andrew Luck and Tony Romo—stayed in the player pool. That amplified the impetus to land Luck, whom Team Carter selected with the No. 1 pick. This marks the second straight year he kicked off the proceedings.

Irvin once again stayed loyal to Dallas, grabbing Romo despite the quarterback advising him to take left tackle Tyron Smith instead during a predraft interview on NFL Network.

When a franchise quarterback talks, his team listens. Smith joined Romo as a Round 3 pick, giving Irvin his six Cowboys, all on the offensive end.

After Brown picked AFC North rival A.J. Green, Murray followed the trend. Team Irvin didn't waste any time snatching Odell Beckham Jr., who gained more receiving yards (1,043) during the last eight games than Green did all year (1,041).

Carter's club reached for a battered receiver who sat out the Cincinnati Bengals' loss in the Wild Card Game, but Irvin stole the game's most exciting talent. Picking Green so early looks even more egregious in retrospect considering Carter corralled Jordy Nelson in the 15th round.

For some odd reason, the NFL did not use a snake format, giving Carter a massive advantage by picking ahead of Irvin every round. Yet the error in judgment did not procure lopsided rosters.

Team Carter evened the playing field with some odd choices, most notably Patrick Peterson, the first defensive player taken Wednesday night. Remember when he allowed 171 yards and a touchdown to Julio Jones in Week 13? He'll sure do fine covering Beckham.

Irvin stole Jimmy Graham in the sixth round, a terrific pick considering Rob Gronkowski is playing a different game in Arizona. After the New Orleans Saints star, there's a big drop-off with Greg Olsen, Martellus Bennett and Jason Witten.

Team Irvin, however, offset that value by needlessly reaching for Witten in the eighth round, a homer pick for a declining veteran with just 705 yards during the season. That allowed Carter to receive Bennett and Olsen—superior choices to Witten—without wasting any picks.

Any savvy fantasy drafter understands the significance of position scarcity and knows to wait on tight ends if missing out of the studs. It takes a special kind of dumb to reach for one after already snagging the position's gold standard.

That doesn't take Carter off the hook, either. His side pandered to the crowd by taking all four eligible members of the Arizona Cardinals. Fan support doesn't win football games.

Neither man executed an effective strategy, but it'll still be interesting to see if Carter's medley of stars will beat the Cowboys offense (and others) Sunday.
