Tyrus Thomas to Grizzlies: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Looking to capitalize on an opportunity in the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly reached an agreement with power forward Tyrus Thomas.
According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, Thomas' pact with the Grizzlies is for 10 days:
However, K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune noted that there's reason to be optimistic that Thomas' stay in Memphis won't be brief:
Thomas has been in the NBA Development League playing for the Iowa Energy this season. He's looking to become a significant NBA contributor again since being amnestied by Charlotte following the 2012-13 season.
Thomas recently talked to Spears about his journey to get back in the NBA and how being out of the game has affected him:
"The last two years I've just been miserable. I hate when people say, 'You're getting paid, so it's cool.' No, it's not [expletive] cool. I'm [expletive] miserable sitting at home.
I'm not broke. I'm not desperate for money. When playing basketball is what you love to do and you physically can't do it and you still have that urge to do it, it's tough.
"
Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders noted that Thomas can become part of a solid group of former players who used the D-League to get a second chance:
Thomas' career with the Bobcats fizzled quickly, as he averaged just 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 26 games during his final season. He had two years left on his deal at the time he was waived under the amnesty provision.
Now, Thomas is coming into a perfect situation. The Grizzlies are 29-12, first place in the Southwest Division, and can use depth behind Zach Randolph at the power forward spot. Thomas is just 28 years old and isn't going to cost them much in terms of dollars, so it makes sense to take a chance on him.
Based on his comments, Thomas is as motivated as ever to prove his worth to teams around the NBA. Even if he doesn't stick with Memphis, other teams may see him as a valuable asset worth grabbing after his contract is up.
