NFL Playoff Schedule 2015: Championship Dates, Matchups Review and Bracket Odds

Steven CookJan 16, 2015

The final weekend of the 2014-15 season with multiple football games is upon us.

Sadly, the conclusion of NFL Championship Game Weekend will coincide with the last time football fans will be able to catch more than one game in a single day. After the AFC and NFC champions are crowned, all that's left to look forward to is Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Arizona.

While the big stage and bright lights of the Super Bowl leave plenty to talk about, there's nothing like a day chock-full of NFL action. And Sunday will be the last chance for fans to veg out in front of the TV all afternoon—and evening—long.

Top Matchup: Colts QB Andrew Luck vs. Patriots Secondary

Doomed for another divisional-round flameout, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has led Indianapolis to uncharted territory—at least since he's been there—and now faces the biggest test of all.

OK, perhaps the Super Bowl is the supreme stage that Luck and Co. are chasing. But there's no doubting that the Colts have a monkey to get off their back in the form of the New England Patriots.

Luck has faced the Patriots three times since coming into the league, having been trounced on every occasion by an average of 26 points. But not for a lack of yardage from Luck, who threw for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in every meeting.

However, Luck struggled mightily to protect the football in those games, and his completion numbers were down across the board, per NESN.com's Doug Kyed:

Luck will go up against a lot of familiar Patriots faces come Sunday, but his most important opponents on the defensive side haven't been around long.

Cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner were both brought in to resurrect the Patriots' dominant secondary, and although the stats (17th in pass defense) don't totally show it, it has worked. Revis has reclaimed his spot as an elite corner, and Browner's size (6'4", 221 pounds) and athletic ability have been a great fit opposite him.

Even a potential future Hall of Famer in Revis can't deny the stardom of Luck, however.

"A rising young star," Revis said of Luck, per ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. "The passes he throws, the way he runs the offense, kind of looks like Peyton Manning all over again. You have to give him his credit. He’s worked hard, brought them this far."

The Patriots showed with their 35-point barrage against the Ravens—and all season, really—that they can put up the points however needed, which will put the onus on Luck and the Colts to match their output on the scoreboard.

Will he be able to do it? Former Stanford buddy and tight end Coby Fleener could be the X-factor after going for 144 yards against New England in Week 11. However, the Colts won't be able to afford another disappearance from T.Y. Hilton, who went for just 21 yards on seven targets in that game.

Hilton has the speed to gash any defense, but he will more than likely be played close to the vest by Revis throughout the contest. Whether it's him, Reggie Wayne or Hakeem Nicks, receivers will need to make plays against the Patriots secondary to keep Luck from forcing the issue and throwing picks.
