Marcus Thornton Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz, Speculation Surrounding Celtics Guard
With the Boston Celtics going into full sell mode earlier this year by trading Rajon Rondo, everything is on the table before the 2015 NBA trade deadline hits.
Marcus Thornton could be the next player on the move, though it won't be an easy sell.
According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, Thornton is generating a lot of interest despite the fact his salary is driving his market down:
It's no surprise that Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge is exploring all trade possibilities. As ESPN's Marc Stein noted on Twitter, no team has been as active since June's draft—and there are plenty of attractive pieces still left:
Ainge told Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald that he didn't come into the season looking to make moves, but the team's performance necessitated action in order to improve things for the future.
“I knew that where we are now was a possibility when we came into this year,” Ainge said. “But I was hopeful last summer that we could acquire some more guys and build a more veteran-like team that was more ready to win sooner. But we weren’t able to do it.”
Thornton does have limitations, which is why the market is scared of his salary.
He's just 27 years old and is averaging 7.6 points per game in 15 minutes played this season, but he's shooting just 40.9 percent from the floor. The former LSU star does have some range on his shot, hitting 36.2 percent from three-point range in his career.
Unless the Celtics are able to kick in money for Thornton—or take less in a deal—it seems like Ainge won't be able to initiate much of a bidding war.
There is always a market for role players, though, especially down the stretch, so don't be surprised to see things pick up before Feb. 19.
