The Authority Should Be Used to Get New Stars Over

Sharon GlencrossJan 14, 2015

Following The Authority’s recent return to television—after a whopping four weeks away—it’s time to accept that fact that, in some manner or another, the McMahon family will always been plastered all over television.

Perhaps WWE lacks faith in the wrestlers to fully carry its flagship program. It could be that Vince McMahon feels his daughter and her husband can garner solid ratings for Raw in these tough times.

Or maybe WWE television has been centred on the family for so long that it’s impossible for the writers to contemplate scripting a show without the McMahons in the mix somewhere.

Regardless, the message is clear: Triple H and Stephanie McMahon are here to stay.

However, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Stephanie and Triple H are great, well-rounded heel characters who know how to work a crowd. They can use their star power to give newer, marginalized wrestlers the rub they need to become big names.

If WWE is willing to use The Authority stable to get over new stars, it could be hugely advantageous to its long-term future.

Case in point: Seth Rollins has been aided by his storyline association with the married couple. He has settled nicely into the role of a scheming, megalomaniacal heel and likely has a run with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in his future. Like them or not, the McMahons are a significant part of this.

Even when the booking isn’t great—for example, Rollins' nonsensical loss to John Cena at TLC—his association with the pair has helped him maintain a high-profile spot on the roster.

Kane has been helped too. It’s hard for the giant to remain relevant and fresh after nearly 20 years on the roster, but at least his gig with The Authority is giving him something new to do.

With all that in mind, imagine what joining The Authority could do for someone such as Cesaro or Jack Swagger—or some other long-term lower midcarder who could desperately use the career boost.

When you’re associated with the McMahons—even as an enforcer or a bodyguard—you immediately garner a lot of airtime and become an integral part of the storyline. You tangle with major stars such as Cena, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose in the ring. You get promo time. You get a fair amount of attention.

Is it a guaranteed ticket to WWE megastardom? Not really. But it does give you the opportunity to become something bigger and better than you are.  And in regard to most of the stagnant midcarders on the roster, all they need is a good opportunity to prove what they can do.

If WWE plays its cards right, The Authority can be an asset in helping establish new wrestlers as stars.
