Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, More

Tom SunderlandAug 17, 2015

Sergio Ramos has committed his long-term future to Real Madrid by signing a new five-year contract that will see him remain at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2020.

Madrid (translated by Eurosport) confirmed the Spaniard's commitment following a summer of unrest in the capital, during which Ramos was linked with a move to Manchester United.

The 29-year-old's previous deal was set to expire in 2017, and it seemed his loyalty to the club had been strained, leading United to lodge a bid of £28.6 million for his signature, per BBC Sport.

Any notion of Ramos penning new terms with the 2013-14 Champions League winners appeared to have been ruled out after Sky Sports reported he had requested a move to Old Trafford:

However, Marca (h/t Tom Conn of Inside Spanish Football) suggested Ramos' meeting with Los Blancos president Florentino Perez during the side's pre-season tour of China marked an important step in negotiations:

"Sergio and Rene (Ramos' brother and agent) explained to Real Madrid sporting director Jose Angel Sanchez that his desire was to retire with the club, which they then reiterated to Florentino Perez."

The Guardian's Sid Lowe reported Ramos was expected to pen a deal worth €9 million (£6.42 million) a year after tax, €2 million less than was reportedly on offer at Old Trafford.

Oliver Kay of the Times testified to Ramos' exploits under departed boss Carlo Ancelotti, which led to his being named in UEFA's 2014 Team of the Year:

Since arriving at Real in 2005, the one-time full-back has risen to become one of the world's most respected defenders and was voted fans' Man of the Match in the 2014 Champions League final.

Speculation of a Bernabeu exit went into overdrive following Real's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey in January, with Goal quoting Ramos as voicing his appreciation for the English top flight:

However, Real can now feel secure in knowing their centre-back will remain in Madrid until he is well into his 30s.

Former Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas was quoted in May as naming Ramos as one of the best centre-backs ever to have played in front of him, according to Spanish newspaper AS:

Mentioning the defender in the same sentence as players such as Franz Beckenbauer and Fernando Hierro is no small praise, speaking volumes of just how revered a figure Ramos is at the Bernabeu.

He is expected to replace Casillas as club captain, and is well-situated to enjoy a silverware-laden finale to what can already be considered an exceptional career.
